Chest pain and rapid heartbeat?
Hello Doctor: I have been experiencing chest pain since elementary school, which is always near the heart area.
The pain worsens with each breath, causing me to hold my breath, making it even more difficult to breathe, and it lasts for 2-3 minutes each time.
I would like to know what disease this could be a symptom of.
Additionally, my heart rate often remains between 100-110 beats per minute, even after resting, but my blood pressure is normal.
I have been checked for anemia and thyroid issues, and I do not have insomnia or excessive anxiety.
What could be the problem? Thank you for your response.

Understanding chest pain and rapid heartbeat can be quite concerning, especially when these symptoms have persisted over a long period. Based on your description, it seems you have been experiencing chest pain localized near the heart, which intensifies with breathing, and a consistently elevated heart rate between 100-110 beats per minute, even at rest.
Firstly, it's important to recognize that chest pain can arise from a variety of causes, some of which may be benign while others could indicate a more serious condition. Given that you have undergone several tests, including blood tests that ruled out anemia and thyroid issues, and have normal blood pressure, it seems that some of the more common cardiovascular concerns have been addressed.
The nature of your chest pain, particularly the fact that it worsens with breathing, could suggest a musculoskeletal issue, such as costochondritis, which is inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum. This condition can cause sharp pain that may mimic cardiac pain and is often exacerbated by certain movements or deep breaths. Additionally, anxiety and stress can lead to muscle tension, which may also contribute to chest discomfort.
Your elevated heart rate, known as tachycardia, can be influenced by several factors. While you mentioned that you do not experience anxiety or insomnia, it's worth considering that even subtle stressors or lifestyle factors, such as caffeine intake, dehydration, or lack of physical activity, can contribute to an increased heart rate. In some cases, a condition known as inappropriate sinus tachycardia can occur, where the heart rate is elevated without an identifiable cause.
Another possibility to consider is the role of the autonomic nervous system, which regulates involuntary bodily functions, including heart rate. Dysregulation of this system can lead to symptoms such as rapid heartbeat and chest discomfort, even in the absence of anxiety or panic attacks.
Given your history of chest pain since childhood, it would be prudent to explore this further with a healthcare professional who specializes in cardiology or a related field. They may recommend additional tests, such as a Holter monitor to assess your heart rate over a 24-hour period, or an echocardiogram to evaluate heart function more thoroughly.
In summary, while your symptoms may not immediately suggest a serious cardiac condition, they warrant further investigation to rule out any underlying issues. It's essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and concerns. If your symptoms persist or worsen, seeking a second opinion or further evaluation may provide you with the clarity and reassurance you need. Meanwhile, focusing on a balanced lifestyle with regular exercise, adequate hydration, and stress management techniques can be beneficial for your overall well-being.
