Post-operative care after chest lipoma surgery..?

I had a lipoma removed from below my breast in early September (treated with electrocautery).
The wound has healed, but after more than a month...
1.
I noticed swelling and a hard lump in the breast area, which is larger than the previous lipoma.
I'm not sure what the cause could be.
2.
After the surgery, I strained a muscle (from the breast area to below the rib cage) and it hurts when I stretch.
How long will it take to recover? Thank you.

After undergoing surgery for lipoma removal, it is not uncommon to experience some post-operative concerns, including the development of a hard lump and muscle pain. Let's address your specific questions regarding these issues.

1. Hard Lump Development: The hard lump you are feeling in the area where the lipoma was removed could be due to several reasons. One possibility is that it could be a seroma, which is a collection of fluid that can accumulate in the surgical area. This can occur after surgery as the body heals and can sometimes feel firm or hard. Another possibility is scar tissue formation, which is a normal part of the healing process. Scar tissue can sometimes feel more prominent than the original lipoma, especially if the surgical site has not fully settled. In some cases, if the lump continues to grow or does not improve, it may be necessary to consult with your surgeon for further evaluation. An ultrasound or other imaging studies may be recommended to assess the nature of the lump and rule out any complications.

2. Muscle Pain: The pain you are experiencing when stretching or using the muscles around the surgical site could be due to muscle strain or irritation from the surgery. It is not uncommon for the muscles to be affected during procedures, especially if the surgery involved manipulation of the surrounding tissues. Recovery time can vary significantly depending on the extent of the surgery and your individual healing process. Generally, muscle strains can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to heal, but if the pain persists or worsens, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Physical therapy may also be beneficial in helping to restore strength and flexibility to the affected area.

In terms of recovery, it is essential to listen to your body. Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain, and consider gentle stretching or physical therapy exercises as recommended by your healthcare provider. Over-the-counter pain relief medications may also help manage discomfort.

It is crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider regarding any new symptoms or concerns that arise during your recovery. They can provide personalized advice and interventions based on your specific situation. If you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge from the surgical site), or if the pain becomes severe, do not hesitate to seek medical attention promptly.

In summary, while some post-operative symptoms like hard lumps and muscle pain can be common after lipoma removal, it is essential to monitor these symptoms closely. If you have concerns about the nature of the lump or the duration of muscle pain, consulting with your surgeon or a healthcare professional is the best course of action to ensure proper healing and address any potential complications.

During surgery, the superficial nerves may be affected when the skin is incised, leading to abnormal sensations or numbness around the wound. This is a normal phenomenon and will improve over time.
