Abnormal secretion?
Hello Doctor, I have been experiencing excessive discharge for about one to two years.
Initially, the discharge was yellowish-white and light green, accompanied by itching in the genital area.
After seeing a doctor, I took medication for nearly six months, which alleviated the itching and significantly reduced the discharge.
However, the discharge still appears light yellow or light green, and sometimes it forms clumps in my underwear, resembling dried mucus.
Changing to another doctor, he mentioned that I have not engaged in sexual intercourse and only conducted a brief examination, stating that my vagina is relatively moist.
He prescribed a cooling ointment, but it did not help.
He suggested that since I am younger, I shouldn't have major issues and advised me not to worry, mentioning that I have had irregular periods since childhood.
If I do not take medication to induce my period, it may not come at all, with the longest gap being six months before I sought medication to induce it.
I have also taken traditional Chinese medicine for four years, which initially stabilized my cycle, but after a few months, I still needed Western medication to induce my period.
Typically, my menstrual flow is very light, with only the second and third days being somewhat heavier, but I only need to use small sanitary pads.
Currently, I am taking birth control pills to regulate my cycle, which has made it more regular, but the flow has decreased further.
Except for the second day, I only need to use panty liners.
I usually wear skirts and change my underwear regularly.
Although doctors have said it’s not a concern, the discharge can still be quite bothersome at times.
Could this be related to my constitution? I never had this issue before; it only started in the past year or two.
If the doctor says it’s not a problem, should I really not worry about it? I would like to hear Dr.
Huang's opinion.

Hello, Miss Anonymous: If your vaginal discharge is not increasing, does not have an unpleasant odor, and is not causing itching, it is generally not a concern.
It may be related to individual variations in the local pH of the vagina.
Sometimes, it is normal to have some discharge without any symptoms.
Taking birth control pills to regulate your menstrual cycle can naturally reduce the amount of menstrual flow.
Unless your period lasts less than two days, there should not be any issues.

More Info
Abnormal vaginal discharge can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding its causes and potential solutions is essential for maintaining reproductive health. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing abnormal discharge for about one to two years, characterized by yellowish-white and light green colors, along with a history of itching. You have sought medical advice and have been prescribed medications that have improved your symptoms to some extent, but the discharge persists.
Possible Causes of Abnormal Vaginal Discharge
1. Infections: The most common cause of abnormal vaginal discharge is an infection. This can include bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as trichomoniasis. Each of these conditions can lead to changes in the color, consistency, and odor of vaginal discharge. For instance, bacterial vaginosis often results in a fishy odor and a grayish discharge, while a yeast infection typically causes thick, white, and clumpy discharge.
2. Hormonal Imbalances: Hormonal fluctuations can significantly affect the characteristics of vaginal discharge. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders can lead to irregular menstrual cycles and changes in discharge. Since you mentioned having irregular periods and needing medication to induce menstruation, this could be a contributing factor.
3. Allergies or Irritants: Sometimes, the use of certain soaps, detergents, or hygiene products can irritate the vaginal area, leading to increased discharge or changes in its characteristics. It's essential to use gentle, unscented products to minimize irritation.
4. Physiological Changes: Factors such as stress, diet, and lifestyle can also influence vaginal discharge. Increased stress levels can lead to hormonal changes that might affect your menstrual cycle and discharge.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Further Evaluation: Since you have already seen multiple doctors, it might be beneficial to consult a gynecologist who specializes in abnormal discharge or reproductive health. They may recommend further testing, such as a pelvic exam, cultures, or ultrasounds, to rule out any underlying conditions.
2. Medication Review: If the current medications are not providing relief, discussing alternative treatments with your healthcare provider is crucial. This could include different antifungal or antibacterial medications if an infection is suspected.
3. Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining good hygiene is essential, but avoid over-washing the area, as this can disrupt the natural flora. Wearing breathable cotton underwear and avoiding tight clothing can also help reduce moisture and irritation.
4. Diet and Hydration: A balanced diet rich in probiotics (found in yogurt and fermented foods) can support vaginal health. Staying hydrated is also essential for overall bodily functions.
5. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, including the color, consistency, and any associated symptoms such as itching or odor. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.
6. Emotional Support: Dealing with ongoing health issues can be stressful. Consider seeking support from friends, family, or even a counselor to help manage any anxiety related to your symptoms.
Conclusion
While your doctors have indicated that there may not be a significant concern, your discomfort and the persistence of abnormal discharge warrant further investigation. It’s essential to advocate for your health and seek a thorough evaluation to address your symptoms effectively. Remember, your health is paramount, and understanding your body is the first step toward finding a solution.
