Irregular menstrual cycle after sexual intercourse?
Hello, Doctor: I recently got married and had no sexual intercourse before marriage.
After getting married, we have been having sexual intercourse almost every night until last Sunday (October 31).
My last menstrual period was from October 5 to October 9, and my ovulation period was from October 12 to 19.
However, on the 18th, my husband had unprotected intercourse and ejaculated inside me.
The next day, I noticed a milky white discharge from my genital area.
Since getting married, my husband and I have been busy with a major company event until last Saturday.
My menstrual cycle has been regular, but I have noticed that it has been delayed by 2 to 3 days over the past 3 to 6 months.
I have taken pregnancy tests during this time, and they all showed negative results.
Now, it is 2 days past my expected menstrual period, and it still hasn't arrived.
I would like to know if my situation indicates that I might be pregnant.
However, I do not currently feel any signs of pregnancy and do not feel unwell; I just sometimes feel tired (as I have trouble sleeping well, so I often feel tired in the morning but have energy in the afternoon).
Is my delayed period due to pregnancy?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the factors affecting the menstrual cycle are numerous, including age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, diet, uterine or cervical lesions, infections, and pregnancy, among others.
It is not possible to determine whether or not you are pregnant based solely on subjective symptoms.
If your period is more than a week late, it is advisable to take a urine test to check for pregnancy or to rule out hormonal imbalances or other causes.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

More Info
Understanding irregular periods after increased sexual activity can be a complex issue, especially for someone who has recently entered into a new sexual relationship. In your case, the combination of increased sexual activity, potential stress from wedding-related activities, and changes in your menstrual cycle can all contribute to the irregularity you are experiencing.
Firstly, it’s important to note that stress can significantly impact your menstrual cycle. The body responds to stress by releasing hormones that can disrupt the normal hormonal balance necessary for ovulation and menstruation. Since you mentioned that you have been busy with company activities following your marriage, this could be a contributing factor to your delayed period.
Regarding your sexual activity, you mentioned that your husband did not use a condom during intercourse and that he ejaculated inside you. This does increase the risk of pregnancy, especially if it occurred around your ovulation period. However, you also stated that you have taken pregnancy tests that have returned negative results. Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable when taken after a missed period, but they can sometimes yield false negatives, particularly if taken too early.
The white discharge you observed the day after intercourse could be normal cervical mucus, which can vary in consistency and color throughout your menstrual cycle. It’s not uncommon for women to experience changes in discharge due to hormonal fluctuations, especially after starting a new sexual relationship.
Your menstrual cycle can also be affected by other factors such as changes in diet, exercise, and overall health. If you have been more physically active or have altered your eating habits since your marriage, these changes could also play a role in your cycle's irregularity.
Given that your period is now two days late and you are experiencing some fatigue, it would be advisable to wait a few more days and take another pregnancy test if your period does not start. If you continue to experience irregular cycles or if you have any other concerning symptoms, such as severe pain, unusual discharge, or significant changes in your health, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a more thorough evaluation, including a blood test for pregnancy and an assessment of your menstrual health.
In summary, while the possibility of pregnancy exists due to unprotected intercourse, other factors such as stress and lifestyle changes may also be contributing to your irregular periods. Monitoring your symptoms and consulting with a healthcare professional if your period does not arrive soon will help clarify your situation and ensure your reproductive health is managed appropriately.
