There is still some bleeding one month after hemorrhoid surgery?

Hello, doctor.
It has been a month since my hemorrhoid surgery.
I still experience some pain when I cough or stand up, and the cotton placed at the anal opening to absorb secretions, which was initially almost free of blood (about the size of a needle tip), has recently shown a bit more blood (about a drop).
I have bowel movements twice a day; the stools are not hard, but there is some blood mixed in, although there are no drops of blood, and the toilet water is not red.
Is this pain and bleeding normal?

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery

After hemorrhoid surgery, the wound should be mostly healed after one month.
At this time, it is important to avoid constipation and straining during bowel movements or spending too much time on the toilet, as this can still lead to pain and bleeding from the wound.
It is recommended to increase the intake of dietary fiber and fluids.
If necessary, you may also ask your doctor to prescribe a stool softener.

After undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, experiencing some pain and minor bleeding one month post-operation can be common, but it is essential to understand the context and specifics of your symptoms. Hemorrhoid surgery, whether it is a traditional excisional procedure or a minimally invasive technique, can result in a variety of postoperative experiences, including pain and bleeding.

Firstly, it is important to note that pain after hemorrhoid surgery is expected, especially during activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, or standing up. The surgical site is still healing, and any strain can cause discomfort. Typically, this pain should gradually decrease over time. If you are still experiencing significant pain after a month, it may warrant further evaluation by your healthcare provider to ensure there are no complications, such as infection or improper healing.

Regarding the bleeding, minor bleeding can occur as the surgical site heals. The presence of blood on the cotton placed at the anal area, especially if it is minimal (like the size of a needle tip), can be considered normal. However, it is crucial to differentiate between minor spotting and more significant bleeding. If the bleeding increases or if you notice bright red blood in your stool or on toilet paper, it is advisable to contact your healthcare provider. The fact that you mentioned your bowel movements are not hard and that you are experiencing some blood mixed with stool but not dripping into the toilet suggests that you might be dealing with some irritation or minor complications from the surgery.

It is also essential to maintain a high-fiber diet and stay hydrated to ensure soft stools, which can help minimize strain during bowel movements and reduce the risk of further irritation or bleeding. Over-the-counter stool softeners may also be beneficial if you find it challenging to maintain regular bowel movements without straining.

In summary, while some pain and minor bleeding can be normal one month after hemorrhoid surgery, it is crucial to monitor the severity and frequency of these symptoms. If you notice any worsening of pain, increased bleeding, or any new symptoms, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination or recommend further tests to rule out any complications and ensure proper healing. Remember, every patient's recovery process is unique, and maintaining open communication with your healthcare team is vital for a smooth recovery.
