Postoperative bleeding after hemorrhoid surgery?
Hello Doctor, I had hemorrhoid surgery at the clinic in early July, and it seems to be a case of mixed internal and external hemorrhoids.
Currently, the wound no longer hurts, but I notice some blood when I wipe after a bowel movement.
The amount of blood is small, and the color is light.
Is this a normal post-operative situation, or could it indicate another condition?

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery
In general, the surgical wound from hemorrhoid surgery will heal in about a month.
If there is no pain, bleeding typically subsides within 1 to 2 weeks.
During this period, it is important to avoid constipation and prolonged sitting.

After undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience some bleeding, especially during bowel movements. The presence of blood on toilet paper or in the stool can be concerning, but it is essential to understand the context and the nature of the bleeding to determine whether it is a normal postoperative occurrence or a sign of a potential complication.
In your case, since you mentioned that the bleeding is minimal and the blood appears to be a lighter color, it may indicate that the bleeding is from the surgical site rather than from a deeper source. After hemorrhoid surgery, particularly for mixed internal and external hemorrhoids, the surgical site can be sensitive and may bleed slightly due to irritation from bowel movements, especially if the stool is hard or if there is straining involved. This is often exacerbated by constipation or the passage of hard stools, which can cause trauma to the healing tissue.
However, it is crucial to monitor the situation closely. Here are a few considerations:
1. Normal Postoperative Bleeding: Light bleeding or spotting after hemorrhoid surgery can be normal, especially if it occurs shortly after the procedure. As the surgical site heals, some minor bleeding may occur, particularly with bowel movements.
2. Signs of Complications: If the bleeding increases in volume, becomes bright red (indicating fresh blood), or is accompanied by other symptoms such as severe pain, swelling, or signs of infection (like fever or pus), it is essential to seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of complications such as infection, a hematoma, or issues with the surgical site.
3. Stool Softening: To minimize the risk of further irritation and bleeding, it is advisable to maintain soft stools. This can be achieved through dietary changes, such as increasing fiber intake (fruits, vegetables, whole grains) and staying well-hydrated. Over-the-counter stool softeners may also be beneficial.
4. Follow-Up Care: It is essential to keep follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider to ensure proper healing. If the bleeding persists or worsens, or if you have any concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your surgeon or healthcare provider for further evaluation.
5. Infection Risk: While minor bleeding may not indicate an infection, it is still essential to be vigilant. If you notice any unusual discharge, increased pain, or fever, these could be signs of an infection that requires medical attention.
In summary, while some light bleeding after hemorrhoid surgery can be normal, it is vital to monitor the situation closely. If you have any doubts or if the bleeding changes in character or volume, consult your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and ensure that your recovery proceeds smoothly.
