Occasional sharp pain in the left chest?

I have been experiencing occasional sharp pain in my left chest for three days.
I have tried to feel for any lumps but couldn't find anything.
However, I have noticed a noticeable difference in size, with my left breast appearing enlarged.
Since this is the first time this has happened, I would like to know which specialist I should see.

Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/11/18

Perform a self-examination about a week after your menstrual period ends.
If you still have symptoms or notice asymmetry between the left and right sides, you may want to consult a breast surgeon.
Thank you for your question.

Experiencing occasional sharp pain in the left breast can be concerning, especially when accompanied by noticeable swelling or changes in size. Given your description, it’s important to approach this situation with a clear understanding of potential causes and the appropriate steps to take.

Firstly, breast pain, known medically as mastalgia, can arise from various factors. These include hormonal fluctuations, particularly related to the menstrual cycle, which can cause breast tissue to swell and become tender. Other common causes of breast pain include fibrocystic changes, which are benign lumps or cysts that can form in the breast tissue, and musculoskeletal issues, such as muscle strain or nerve irritation, which can mimic breast pain.

In your case, since you have noted that the left breast appears to be enlarged and painful, it is prudent to seek medical advice. While many instances of breast pain are benign, the presence of swelling and the fact that this is a new symptom warrant further evaluation. Given your family history of breast cancer, it is especially important to be vigilant about any changes in your breast health.

You should consider visiting a breast specialist or a general surgeon who has experience in breast health. They can perform a thorough clinical examination and may recommend imaging studies such as a mammogram or ultrasound to assess the breast tissue more closely. These tests can help identify any abnormalities, such as cysts, fibroids, or other changes that may require further investigation.

If the pain is accompanied by other symptoms, such as a lump that can be felt, changes in the skin of the breast, or discharge from the nipple, these could be additional indicators that further evaluation is necessary. It’s also important to monitor any changes in the pain pattern—if it becomes more frequent, severe, or is associated with other concerning symptoms, you should seek medical attention sooner rather than later.

In summary, while occasional sharp pain in the left breast can often be benign, the combination of pain, swelling, and your family history suggests that it is wise to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and determine if any further diagnostic tests or treatments are needed. Remember, early detection and intervention are key in managing breast health effectively.
