Bleeding that occurs outside of the menstrual period?
Hello doctor, my menstrual period ended on November 13.
I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on November 16.
Two days later, when I went to the bathroom, I noticed some bleeding, but it was not much.
Today, November 22, I still see a small amount of blood and discharge when I wipe.
Could you please tell me what the issue might be? I'm a bit worried, and only the male partner took precautions.
Mo, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/11/22
Dr. Huang Yiwen reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello Ms.
Mo: Your situation may be due to a small amount of residual bleeding from your menstrual period that has not yet cleared.
It should not be a major concern.
I suggest you wait a little longer to see if it resolves.
If you continue to experience recurrent bleeding, you can consult your doctor.

More Info
Post-menstrual bleeding, or bleeding that occurs after a menstrual period has ended, can be concerning for many individuals. In your case, you mentioned that your menstrual period ended on November 13, and you had sexual intercourse on November 16. You then noticed some bleeding when wiping on November 18, and this has continued intermittently until November 22.
There are several potential causes for post-menstrual bleeding, and it is important to consider them in the context of your situation:
1. Hormonal Fluctuations: After your menstrual period, your hormone levels can fluctuate, which may lead to light spotting or bleeding. This is often referred to as "breakthrough bleeding" and can occur due to changes in estrogen and progesterone levels.
2. Ovulation: Depending on your cycle length, ovulation can occur approximately 10 to 14 days after the end of your period. Some women experience ovulation bleeding, which is typically light and short-lived. If you have a shorter cycle, this could be a possibility.
3. Implantation Bleeding: If there was any chance of conception during your sexual encounter, light bleeding could be a sign of implantation bleeding, which occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. This usually happens about a week after conception.
4. Infections: Infections of the reproductive tract, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or bacterial vaginosis, can cause abnormal bleeding. If you experience additional symptoms like unusual discharge, itching, or pain, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.
5. Cervical Erosion or Polyps: Sometimes, the cervix can become irritated or eroded, especially after sexual intercourse, leading to light bleeding. Cervical polyps, which are benign growths on the cervix, can also cause bleeding.
6. Other Medical Conditions: Conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, or other structural abnormalities in the uterus can lead to abnormal bleeding. If the bleeding persists or is accompanied by severe pain, it is important to seek medical evaluation.
Given that you mentioned the bleeding is light and has been ongoing for a few days, it may not be a cause for immediate concern, especially if there are no other alarming symptoms. However, it is always best to err on the side of caution. If the bleeding continues, increases in volume, or is accompanied by pain, discomfort, or any other unusual symptoms, I recommend scheduling an appointment with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or other tests to determine the underlying cause of the bleeding.
In summary, while there are several benign reasons for post-menstrual bleeding, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns. Your health and peace of mind are important, and a medical professional can provide the best guidance tailored to your specific situation.
