Foreskin issues

Hello Dr.
Du, I underwent microscopic surgery for varicocele two weeks ago, and my wound is healing well.
However, three days ago, I suddenly noticed a swelling in one area of my foreskin (I have not engaged in sexual activity, and the foreskin is retracted behind the glans).
There is no redness, no pain, and no discharge.
Yesterday, I noticed another area of the foreskin has also swollen.
I consulted the surgeon who performed the operation, but he said he was unsure of the cause and suggested it might be due to something being trapped.
He helped me pull the foreskin forward to cover the glans and mentioned that the swelling should subside in 3-5 days, advising me to observe it for a while.
After the consultation, about 2-3 hours later, I went to the restroom and saw that the swelling had decreased.
However, today during the day, there is a slight swelling in one area, but overall, it is much better than before.
Dr.
Du, could this be related to the microscopic varicocele surgery? My surgical wound was covered with waterproof adhesive tape, which I changed to a band-aid after seven days (and I am no longer using any covering now).
Could this be an allergy? Thank you.

Hello: It should not be a concern; it is related to poor local circulation.
It is advisable to keep the foreskin covering the glans.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the swelling of your foreskin after undergoing varicocele microsurgery. It's understandable to be worried about any changes in your body following a surgical procedure, especially when it involves sensitive areas.

From what you've described, it seems that the swelling in your foreskin is not accompanied by redness, pain, or discharge, which are often signs of infection or inflammation. The fact that the swelling has fluctuated and even resolved after a few hours suggests that it may not be a serious issue. Here are some possible explanations for the swelling:
1. Post-Surgical Edema: After any surgical procedure, it is common for the body to experience some swelling in the surrounding tissues due to inflammation or fluid accumulation. This can occur even in areas that were not directly operated on, as the body responds to trauma.

2. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: The use of adhesive bandages or topical products (like the waterproof tape you mentioned) can sometimes cause localized irritation or allergic reactions, leading to swelling. If you have sensitive skin, this could be a factor.

3. Mechanical Factors: You mentioned that the surgeon pulled the foreskin forward during your visit. This manipulation could have temporarily caused swelling. Additionally, if there was any friction or pressure in that area, it might contribute to localized swelling.

4. Lymphatic Response: The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in healing. Sometimes, lymphatic drainage can be affected post-surgery, leading to temporary swelling in nearby areas.

5. Infection: While you noted the absence of pain and redness, it's still essential to keep an eye on the situation. If the swelling persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms (like fever or discharge), it would be prudent to consult your healthcare provider again.

Given that the swelling has improved and is not causing you discomfort, it may not be directly related to the varicocele surgery. However, it’s always best to err on the side of caution. Here are some recommendations:
- Observation: Continue to monitor the swelling. If it resolves completely, that’s a good sign. If it returns or worsens, seek medical advice.

- Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that the adhesive from the bandages might be causing irritation, consider using hypoallergenic options in the future.

- Gentle Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene in the area without excessive scrubbing, which could exacerbate irritation.

- Follow-Up: If the swelling does not resolve or if you have any new symptoms, it would be wise to return to your surgeon or a urologist for further evaluation.

In conclusion, while the swelling of your foreskin may not be directly related to your varicocele surgery, it’s essential to keep monitoring it. If you have any concerns or if the situation changes, don’t hesitate to seek further medical advice. Your health and peace of mind are paramount. Thank you for sharing your experience, and I hope you find relief soon!
