Post-Surgery Penile Swelling: What to Expect and When to Worry - Urology

The foreskin swelling resembles a mushroom?

I had surgery on my penis in mid-November, and as a result, my foreskin has swollen.
The doctor told me that the swelling would go down within 3 days to 3 months.
Is that true? It's been over a month now, and I'm really anxious because it doesn't feel like it's getting better.
The area under the foreskin is swollen, somewhat like edema but not exactly, as the foreskin feels a bit hard.
It seems thick and swollen, almost like a mushroom.
I visited the urology department at the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital in Banqiao, and the doctor only prescribed medication and ointment.
It's quite distressing during erections because the swollen foreskin constricts, and I can't push it back to its original position.
This leaves my glans exposed, which is really bothersome.
Doctor, what should I do? I'm not undergoing a circumcision; I had surgery on my penis, but now the foreskin is swollen.
Is this tissue inflammation? I'm very worried that it will be like this for the rest of my life...
I'm scared.

Ami: Hello, I'm not sure what kind of surgery you had, but I guess it might be a curvature correction surgery.
In any case, general penile surgeries can potentially cause injury to blood or lymphatic return, leading to localized swelling.
Therefore, post-surgery, it is common to be proactive with treatments such as ice packs and anti-swelling measures.
If swelling persists for an extended period, it may lead to fibrotic changes in the foreskin, which can be difficult to resolve.
This should not be related to an infection.
Recommendation: Localized heat application can help accelerate wound healing.

More Info

After undergoing penile surgery, it is not uncommon to experience swelling in the area, particularly if the procedure involved manipulation or alteration of the surrounding tissues. The timeline for swelling to subside can vary significantly from person to person, and while some may see improvement within a few days, others might take weeks or even months for the swelling to resolve completely.
In your case, having had surgery in mid-November and still experiencing significant swelling after a month is understandably concerning. The swelling you describe, which feels hard and resembles a thickened area, could be due to several factors, including inflammation, fluid accumulation (edema), or even scar tissue formation. It is essential to differentiate between normal postoperative swelling and signs of complications, such as infection or excessive scarring.

Here are some key points to consider regarding your situation:
1. Normal Healing Process: After surgery, the body goes through a healing process that includes inflammation. This is a natural response as your body works to repair itself. Swelling can be a part of this process, and it may take time for the tissues to return to their normal state.

2. Signs of Complications: While some swelling is normal, you should be vigilant for signs of complications. These may include:
- Increased redness or warmth in the area
- Persistent or worsening pain
- Discharge that is foul-smelling or unusual
- Fever or chills
If you notice any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.

3. Follow-Up Care: It is good that you have already consulted with a urologist. If the swelling persists and is causing significant discomfort or functional issues, such as difficulty with erections or pain during sexual activity, you should consider returning to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the underlying tissues and determine if there is any fluid collection or other issues that need to be addressed.

4. Management Options: Depending on the cause of the swelling, your doctor may suggest various management strategies. These could include:
- Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling and discomfort
- Topical treatments to help with inflammation
- Physical therapy or specific exercises to improve circulation and healing
- In some cases, a minor procedure may be necessary to drain excess fluid if it is determined to be a significant issue.

5. Emotional Well-Being: It is also essential to address the emotional aspect of your recovery. Anxiety about your condition can exacerbate your symptoms and overall well-being. Consider discussing your concerns with your doctor, who may refer you to a mental health professional if needed. Support groups or counseling can also be beneficial in managing anxiety related to health issues.

6. Communication with Your Doctor: When you have follow-up appointments, prepare a list of questions or concerns you have about your recovery. This can help ensure that you address all your worries during your visit. Don't hesitate to express your feelings about the swelling and its impact on your quality of life.

In conclusion, while postoperative swelling is common, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. If the swelling does not improve or worsens, further evaluation may be necessary to ensure that your recovery progresses as expected. Remember, your health and comfort are paramount, and seeking help when needed is always the right approach.
