Temporary Blurriness in Eyes: Causes and Solutions - Ophthalmology

Sometimes it can be foggy?

Hello, sometimes my vision becomes blurry (usually for a second or two right after blinking).
This mostly happens during the first session of writing an exam after waking up from a nap, or when I use the computer too late at night.
I have a myopia of -6.00.
Could this be related to having watery eye discharge (which I have noticed), or is there another issue?

Dr. Cai Wenyuan reply Ophthalmology

Hello: Yes, it is possible, but if the symptoms persist for a long time or worsen, you should seek medical attention for an examination.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Temporary blurriness in the eyes can be a common issue, especially for individuals with myopia (nearsightedness) like yourself. The phenomenon you describe—experiencing a brief moment of blurriness after blinking or upon waking—can be attributed to several factors, including tear film instability, eye fatigue, and environmental conditions.

Causes of Temporary Blurriness
1. Tear Film Instability: The tear film is a thin layer of fluid that covers the surface of the eye, providing moisture and clarity. When you blink, this film is spread across the cornea. If the tear film is uneven or insufficient, it can lead to temporary blurriness. This is particularly common upon waking or after prolonged screen time, as the eyes may not produce enough tears during these periods.

2. Eye Fatigue: Extended periods of focusing on screens or reading can lead to digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome. Symptoms include blurred vision, dry eyes, and discomfort. If you find that your blurriness occurs after long sessions of computer use or studying, it may be a sign of eye fatigue.

3. Environmental Factors: Dry air, especially in air-conditioned or heated environments, can exacerbate dry eye symptoms. If your eyes are not adequately lubricated, you may experience temporary blurriness.

4. Myopia and Visual Acuity: With a prescription of -6.00 diopters, your eyes are significantly nearsighted. This means that while you can see nearby objects clearly, your distance vision is compromised. If your glasses or contact lenses are not worn consistently, or if there are fluctuations in your prescription, this can contribute to visual disturbances.

5. Eye Conditions: While less common, certain eye conditions such as dry eye syndrome, allergies, or even the presence of eye debris (like the "liquid eye mucus" you mentioned) can lead to temporary blurriness. If you notice persistent symptoms or changes in your vision, it is essential to consult an eye care professional.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Regular Eye Exams: Ensure that you have regular check-ups with an optometrist or ophthalmologist. They can assess your vision and eye health, and adjust your prescription if necessary.

2. Manage Digital Eye Strain: Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This helps reduce eye strain and fatigue.

3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help maintain overall hydration, which can also benefit your tear production.

4. Use Artificial Tears: Over-the-counter lubricating eye drops can help alleviate dryness and improve tear film stability. Choose preservative-free options for frequent use.

5. Adjust Your Environment: If you work in a dry environment, consider using a humidifier to add moisture to the air. Also, take breaks to step outside or look away from screens regularly.

6. Proper Eyewear: Ensure that your glasses or contact lenses are appropriate for your level of myopia. If you experience blurriness when not wearing corrective lenses, it is crucial to wear them consistently.

7. Consult a Specialist: If the blurriness persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as pain, redness, or significant changes in vision, seek medical advice promptly. A thorough examination can rule out any underlying conditions.

In conclusion, while temporary blurriness can be a nuisance, it is often manageable with proper care and attention to your eye health. By implementing these strategies, you can help minimize the occurrence of blurriness and maintain clearer vision throughout your daily activities.
