The genital area is itching to the point of being unbearable?

Hello, I have a sexual health issue I would like to ask about.
Yesterday, after having sexual intercourse with my boyfriend, I felt it was a bit excessive.
Afterward, I experienced some swelling in my genital area, which subsided the next day but turned into an unbearable itch.
I have rinsed with clean water and applied ice, but the itching persists.
Additionally, there is some redness and slight skin breakdown in the genital area.
Since I am currently abroad, seeking medical attention is a bit challenging.
Are there any methods to alleviate this?

Iris, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/01/02

A physician must not provide treatment, prescribe medication, or issue a diagnosis without a personal examination.
Based on your description of symptoms, it is more likely that you are experiencing contact dermatitis or edema.
It is advisable to maintain a light diet, adhere to a regular daily routine, and keep the perineal area clean and dry.
Avoid wearing tight clothing.
You may soak in a bath to alleviate symptoms.
If symptoms persist, please consult a physician for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

Unbearable itching after intimacy can be quite distressing and is often caused by a variety of factors. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing significant discomfort, including swelling, intense itching, and redness in the genital area. Here are some potential causes and solutions to consider:

Possible Causes:
1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: The most common cause of itching after sexual activity is irritation or an allergic reaction to lubricants, condoms, or even soaps and detergents used on clothing or bedding. If you used any new products recently, this could be the culprit.

2. Infection: Yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can also lead to itching, swelling, and redness. If the itching persists or worsens, it’s important to consider the possibility of an infection.

3. Physical Trauma: Engaging in sexual activity can sometimes lead to minor injuries or trauma to the vaginal area, especially if there was a lack of lubrication or if the activity was vigorous. This can result in swelling and irritation.

4. Skin Conditions: Conditions like eczema or psoriasis can also affect the genital area, leading to itching and discomfort.

Solutions:
1. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that a product may have caused the reaction, discontinue its use. This includes any new soaps, lubricants, or condoms. Opt for hypoallergenic products in the future.

2. Gentle Cleansing: Continue to wash the area gently with warm water. Avoid using harsh soaps or douches, as these can further irritate the skin.

3. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress can help reduce swelling and soothe the itching. Make sure to wrap ice in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin.

4. Over-the-Counter Treatments: Consider using over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream or anti-itch creams that are safe for use in the genital area. These can help reduce inflammation and itching.

5. Moisturizers: If dryness is an issue, applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer can help soothe the skin.

6. Avoid Scratching: As tempting as it may be, try to avoid scratching the area, as this can lead to further irritation or infection.

7. Seek Medical Attention: Since you mentioned being abroad and having difficulty accessing medical care, try to find a local clinic or pharmacy where you can consult with a healthcare professional. If the symptoms persist for more than a few days, worsen, or if you notice any unusual discharge, it’s crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform necessary tests to rule out infections or other underlying conditions.

When to Seek Help:
- If the itching does not improve with home care.

- If you develop a fever or experience severe pain.

- If you notice unusual discharge or bleeding.

- If the redness and swelling do not subside.

In summary, while there are several potential causes for your symptoms, it’s essential to monitor your condition closely. If home remedies do not provide relief, or if you experience any concerning symptoms, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Remember that maintaining open communication with your partner about comfort and any issues that arise during intimacy is also important for a healthy sexual relationship.
