Severe hair loss?
Hello, I would like to ask about my current situation.
Since entering university, I have noticed significant hair loss every time I blow-dry my hair, and it feels much worse than before.
I am losing a lot of short, newly grown hairs.
Could this be due to the fact that I have naturally curly hair and have been perming and dyeing it since middle school, which may have damaged my scalp? I am now taking better care of my hair and using Olay's women's hair care serum.
My father has a family history of baldness, while my mother has a family history of gray hair.
I would like to know if there are any good dermatologists in Hsinchu, as every time I visit, they just prescribe me medication for a few days.
I am really troubled by this.
Thank you, doctor.

More Info
Severe hair loss can be a distressing experience, particularly for young adults. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing significant hair shedding, especially after styling your hair. This can be attributed to several factors, including genetic predisposition, hair treatments, and possibly underlying scalp conditions.
Causes of Hair Loss
1. Genetic Factors: As you mentioned, there is a family history of hair loss on your father's side. This suggests that you may be genetically predisposed to androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male or female pattern baldness. This condition is characterized by a gradual thinning of hair, often starting at the temples or crown of the head.
2. Hair Treatments: Frequent chemical treatments such as perming and dyeing can damage the hair shaft and scalp. These processes can lead to hair breakage and increased shedding, especially if the scalp becomes irritated or inflamed. Over time, this can contribute to a condition known as telogen effluvium, where hair follicles prematurely enter the shedding phase.
3. Scalp Health: Conditions like seborrheic dermatitis (also known as dandruff) or other forms of dermatitis can lead to itching, inflammation, and hair loss. If your scalp is not healthy, it can affect hair growth.
4. Stress and Lifestyle: Stress, poor diet, and lack of sleep can also contribute to hair loss. It’s essential to maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals that support hair health, such as biotin, zinc, and vitamins A and E.
Treatment Options
1. Topical Treatments: You mentioned using a hair growth serum, which is a good start. Minoxidil (often found in products like Rogaine) is a topical treatment that can help stimulate hair growth and slow down hair loss. It is available over-the-counter and can be effective for both men and women.
2. Oral Medications: If you visit a dermatologist, they may prescribe oral medications such as finasteride for men, which can help reduce hair loss by blocking the hormone responsible for hair thinning. However, this is not typically prescribed for women, especially those who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
3. Hair Care Practices: Be gentle with your hair. Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the hair follicles, and limit the use of heat styling tools. Regularly using a mild shampoo and conditioner can help maintain scalp health.
4. Consultation with a Dermatologist: It’s crucial to find a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss. In Hsinchu, there are several reputable dermatology clinics where you can seek a comprehensive evaluation. They may perform a scalp examination, blood tests to check for underlying conditions, and possibly a biopsy if necessary.
5. Lifestyle Modifications: Incorporate stress-reducing activities into your routine, such as exercise, meditation, or yoga. Ensure you are getting adequate sleep and maintaining a balanced diet.
When to Seek Help
If you notice that your hair loss is worsening or if you experience other symptoms such as scalp irritation, redness, or pain, it’s essential to seek professional help. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, especially in cases of genetic hair loss or scalp conditions.
In summary, while genetic factors may play a significant role in your hair loss, lifestyle choices and scalp health are also critical components. By taking proactive steps and consulting with a qualified dermatologist, you can explore effective treatment options tailored to your specific needs.
