Ear piercing during oral isotretinoin treatment?
Hello doctor, I have been taking isotretinoin for 7 months now and I am still continuing the treatment.
I would like to ask if it is safe to get my ears pierced during this period.
Will it cause hypertrophic scarring at the piercing site? Thank you!

Theoretically, there are risks, but the chances are not significant.
Please evaluate it on your own.

When considering ear piercings while on oral A-retinoids (commonly known as isotretinoin), it's essential to understand how this medication affects your skin and healing processes. Isotretinoin is primarily used to treat severe acne and works by reducing oil production, preventing clogged pores, and promoting skin cell turnover. While it can be highly effective, it also has several side effects that can impact your skin's healing ability.
One of the most significant concerns when getting a piercing while on isotretinoin is the potential for delayed wound healing. A-retinoids can make your skin more sensitive and may lead to increased dryness and irritation. This sensitivity can result in a higher risk of complications during the healing process of a new piercing, such as infections or scarring.
Scarring is another critical factor to consider. Individuals on isotretinoin may experience changes in their skin's healing response, which can lead to hypertrophic scars or keloids, especially if there is a history of scarring tendencies. If you have previously experienced issues with scarring, it may be wise to postpone any cosmetic procedures, including ear piercings, until you have completed your course of isotretinoin and your skin has returned to its normal state.
Moreover, the recommendation is generally to wait at least six months after finishing isotretinoin before undergoing any elective procedures that involve skin penetration, such as piercings. This waiting period allows your skin to recover fully and reduces the risk of complications.
If you are determined to proceed with ear piercings while on isotretinoin, it is crucial to consult with your dermatologist or healthcare provider first. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation, including your skin type, the duration of isotretinoin treatment, and any other underlying conditions you may have.
In summary, while it is technically possible to get ear piercings while taking oral A-retinoids, it is generally not recommended due to the potential for delayed healing and increased risk of scarring. It is best to wait until you have completed your treatment and your skin has stabilized. Always prioritize your skin's health and consult with a medical professional before making decisions that could affect your healing process.
