Can I get pregnant?

On January 19, my boyfriend inserted his finger into my vagina, and afterwards I noticed some intermittent bleeding that lasted for about a day, though it wasn't much.
In the following days, I also experienced vaginal discomfort.
I haven't had sexual intercourse in the past two months, and my last menstrual period was on January 7.
Could this be a sign of pregnancy, or could it be a result of a fingernail injury? Thank you, doctor.

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/01/24

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, I'm sorry I cannot provide a diagnosis based on what you've described.
It could possibly be a nail scratch.
If you continue to experience discomfort, I recommend seeing a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

When it comes to the possibility of pregnancy, vaginal bleeding, and pain, there are several factors to consider. Based on your description, it seems you experienced some bleeding after your boyfriend inserted his finger into your vagina, which lasted for about a day. You also mentioned experiencing intermittent vaginal pain and that your last menstrual period was on January 7.
Firstly, it is important to understand that bleeding after vaginal penetration can occur for various reasons. One common cause is trauma to the vaginal walls or cervix, which can happen if there is vigorous activity or if fingernails are involved. If your boyfriend's fingernails were long or sharp, they could have caused minor abrasions, leading to the bleeding you observed. This type of bleeding is usually light and should resolve quickly, as you described.

Regarding the possibility of pregnancy, it is essential to note that if you had your menstrual period on January 7, and you have not had sexual intercourse since then, the likelihood of being pregnant is quite low. Menstrual cycles can vary, and sometimes women experience spotting or bleeding that can be mistaken for a period, but if you have not engaged in sexual intercourse in the last two months, it is unlikely that you are pregnant.

However, if you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, it is advisable to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. If the test is positive, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In addition to potential pregnancy, the intermittent vaginal pain you are experiencing could be related to several factors, including hormonal changes, infections, or even pelvic floor issues. If the pain persists or worsens, it is crucial to seek medical attention to rule out any underlying conditions.

If you notice any other symptoms, such as unusual discharge, a strong odor, fever, or severe pain, these could indicate an infection or other medical issues that require prompt attention.
In summary, based on the information provided, it seems unlikely that you are pregnant given the timeline of your menstrual cycle and lack of recent sexual activity. The bleeding you experienced may be due to minor trauma, and the vaginal pain could be related to various factors. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms persist, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and care.
