Does menopause have an impact on height?

Hello, I started my first menstruation in the fourth grade, and my mother took me to get menstrual suppression injections, which seemed to be administered once a month.
I’m not sure how many injections I received, but my menstruation returned when I was in the sixth grade.
After that, my height didn’t increase much.
I would like to ask the doctor if menstrual suppression injections have any effect on height growth.
I am currently in the first year of high school and am less than 150 cm tall.

Chopin, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/02/01

Dr. Lin Yishou reply Pediatrics

Menstrual suppression, particularly through the use of hormonal injections, can indeed have an impact on height growth in adolescents. The primary concern revolves around how these hormonal treatments affect the timing and progression of puberty, which is a critical period for growth.

During puberty, the body undergoes significant changes driven by sex hormones, including estrogen and testosterone. In females, estrogen plays a crucial role in the growth spurt typically seen during puberty. It is responsible for the acceleration of growth plate activity, leading to increased height. However, once the growth plates fuse, which occurs after the peak growth spurt, further height increase is unlikely.
When menstrual suppression is employed, it can delay the onset of certain pubertal changes, including the growth spurt. If a young girl receives injections to suppress menstruation, it may also inhibit the natural rise in estrogen levels that would otherwise contribute to the growth spurt. This can result in a situation where the individual may not reach their full height potential, especially if the treatment is prolonged.

In your case, starting menstruation in the fourth grade and subsequently receiving injections to suppress it until the sixth grade may have interfered with your natural growth trajectory. If the injections were administered during a critical growth phase, it is possible that your growth was stunted as a result. The timing of your growth plates closing is also a factor; if they closed earlier due to hormonal suppression, your final height could be affected.

It's important to note that genetics plays a significant role in determining height. If your parents are shorter, it is possible that your height may naturally fall within a similar range. However, hormonal treatments can complicate this genetic predisposition.
If you are currently in high school and concerned about your height, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider, such as an endocrinologist. They can assess your growth plates through X-rays and evaluate your hormonal levels to provide a clearer picture of your growth potential. They may also discuss whether any further interventions are appropriate based on your individual circumstances.

In summary, menstrual suppression can affect height growth by altering the timing and progression of puberty. If you have concerns about your height and the impact of past treatments, seeking professional medical advice is essential. They can help you understand your growth patterns and what, if any, options are available to support your health and development moving forward.
