Genital issues
Hello, I am 49 years old.
I originally had sparse body hair, including in the pubic area, where I only had a small amount of hair in the triangular region.
However, over the past two years, after starting to practice yoga three times a week and participating in a road run once a week, I have noticed a significant increase in pubic hair, including around the labia.
This has surprised me, as I didn't expect to see hair growth at my age.
Is there something wrong with my body, and should I seek medical attention?

It is recommended to first consult with an obstetrician-gynecologist or an endocrinologist to check for any hormonal abnormalities.

Unusual hair growth in the pubic area, especially when it occurs suddenly or in a different pattern than what you are accustomed to, can be concerning. In your case, you mentioned that you have experienced an increase in hair growth in the pubic region over the past two years, coinciding with a change in your exercise routine. While increased physical activity, such as yoga and running, can influence hormone levels and potentially affect hair growth, it is essential to consider other factors that might be contributing to this change.
First, it is important to understand that hair growth patterns can change due to various reasons, including hormonal fluctuations, age, and lifestyle changes. For women, conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can lead to increased hair growth in areas where men typically grow hair, such as the face and pubic region. Hormonal imbalances, particularly involving androgens (male hormones), can also lead to changes in hair growth patterns.
Given that you are 49 years old, it is also worth considering that you may be approaching menopause, a time when hormonal changes can significantly affect your body, including hair growth. Some women experience increased hair growth in certain areas while simultaneously experiencing hair thinning on their scalp during this transition.
If the increase in hair growth is accompanied by other symptoms, such as changes in your menstrual cycle, weight gain, acne, or excessive hair growth in other areas (hirsutism), it would be advisable to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include blood tests to check hormone levels and other potential underlying conditions.
In terms of when to seek medical advice, consider the following guidelines:
1. Sudden Changes: If you notice a sudden increase in hair growth that is different from your normal pattern, it is worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
2. Accompanying Symptoms: If the hair growth is accompanied by other symptoms such as weight changes, menstrual irregularities, or skin changes, it is essential to seek medical advice.
3. Concern for Appearance: If the hair growth is causing you distress or affecting your self-esteem, it may also be a good reason to consult with a healthcare provider.
4. Family History: If there is a family history of hormonal disorders or conditions that affect hair growth, it may be beneficial to discuss this with your doctor.
In conclusion, while changes in hair growth can be a normal part of aging and lifestyle changes, significant or sudden changes warrant a discussion with a healthcare provider. They can help determine if there is an underlying condition that needs to be addressed and provide guidance on potential treatment options if necessary. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body.
