There is a small hard lump on the left side of the neck?
Hello Dr.
Zheng: About a week ago, I noticed a slight itch and a raised area on the skin at the left back of my neck, just below the hairline, which felt like a pimple.
After about three more days, the raised area seemed to burst like a pimple and released some serous fluid.
I initially thought it was just a larger pimple and didn't pay much attention to it.
However, the raised area did not go away, and I now feel a small hard lump there, approximately 1-2 centimeters in size, which is painful when pressed.
I would like to ask what might be the cause of this condition.
I came across a few terms while researching, such as sebaceous cyst, subcutaneous cyst, or possibly something related to lymph nodes.
Thank you for your patience in reading this!

Hello! Thank you for your detailed description of the symptoms you're experiencing. Based on your account, it seems that you have developed a small hard lump on the left side of your neck, which has been accompanied by itching, a sensation similar to a pimple, and some pain upon pressure. Given the nature of your symptoms, there are several potential causes for this lump, and I will outline them below.
1. Sebaceous Cyst (Pilar Cyst): One of the most common causes of a lump under the skin is a sebaceous cyst, which is a non-cancerous growth that occurs when a sebaceous gland becomes blocked. These cysts can feel firm to the touch and may become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and the discharge of fluid. They often appear on the scalp, neck, or face.
2. Lymphadenopathy: The lymph nodes in the neck can become swollen due to various reasons, including infections (like a cold or throat infection), inflammatory conditions, or even more serious issues like malignancies. If the lump is tender and you have had recent infections, this could be a reactive lymph node.
3. Folliculitis or Abscess: If the lump initially felt like a pimple and then discharged fluid, it could be a case of folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles) or an abscess (a collection of pus). These conditions can occur due to bacterial infections and may require drainage or antibiotics.
4. Lipoma: A lipoma is a benign tumor made of fat tissue. These are usually soft, movable, and painless, but they can sometimes become firm if they are deeper in the tissue. They are generally harmless but can be removed if they cause discomfort or for cosmetic reasons.
5. Other Considerations: Other possibilities include dermatological conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa, or even more serious conditions like tumors. However, these are less common.
Recommendations:
Given the persistence of the lump and the associated symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies (like an ultrasound) to better understand the nature of the lump. If there is any suspicion of infection, they may also consider a course of antibiotics.
When to Seek Immediate Care:
- If the lump increases in size rapidly.
- If you develop fever or chills.
- If you experience significant pain or discomfort.
- If there is any change in your overall health status.
Conclusion:
While many lumps in the neck can be benign and self-limiting, it is essential to have a proper diagnosis to rule out any serious conditions. A healthcare professional will be able to provide you with the best course of action based on a thorough evaluation. Please do not hesitate to reach out to a doctor for further assessment. Take care!
