Does this indicate a tendency towards depression?
Hello, doctor.
Last year, when I started dating a girl, my family found out and strongly opposed the relationship because she is a girl and her family background is not as good as ours.
They even threatened me to break up with her immediately, stop all contact, and even demanded that I transfer schools.
I tried to communicate with them, but it was ineffective.
For several months, I couldn't face them and didn't want to talk; I lived in constant fear.
It has now been six months, and although my relationship with my family has improved and I have spoken with a school counselor, I started feeling depressed again after a while.
I have changed from being cheerful and optimistic to someone who dislikes talking, struggles to greet others, is suspicious, emotionally unstable, and feels unhappy, pessimistic, and suffers from insomnia.
I even wonder if I have depression, especially when I am alone.
Additionally, the stress has caused my weight to increase, which has led to ridicule from my family, making me feel worse.
I have even had suicidal thoughts and question the meaning of life.
What should I do? Is this depression?

Hello, internet user: Based on your description, while it cannot be definitively determined whether you have depression, the presence of suicidal thoughts suggests that you should seek a medical evaluation.
The focus should not be on whether you have a diagnosis of depression, but rather on how to improve your quality of life.
If possible, please do not worry about privacy or stigma; allow professional healthcare providers to assist you.

It sounds like you are going through a very challenging and painful time, and I want to acknowledge the courage it takes to share your feelings and experiences. Based on what you've described, it is possible that you are experiencing symptoms of depression. Depression can manifest in various ways, including persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep patterns, feelings of worthlessness, and even thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
Your situation, particularly the conflict with your family regarding your relationship, seems to have had a significant emotional impact on you. The pressure from your family, combined with your feelings of isolation and the changes in your mood and behavior, can contribute to a depressive state. It’s important to recognize that these feelings are valid and that you are not alone in experiencing them.
Here are some signs that may indicate you are dealing with depression:
1. Persistent Sadness: If you find yourself feeling sad or hopeless most of the time, this is a common symptom of depression.
2. Loss of Interest: A noticeable decrease in interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed, such as socializing or hobbies, can be a sign of depression.
3. Emotional Instability: Experiencing mood swings, irritability, or emotional numbness can also indicate depression.
4. Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia or sleeping too much are both common symptoms of depression.
5. Changes in Appetite or Weight: Significant weight gain or loss, or changes in appetite, can be linked to depression.
6. Feelings of Worthlessness: If you often feel like a burden to others or have thoughts of self-harm, it is crucial to seek help immediately.
7. Difficulty Concentrating: Struggling to focus on tasks or feeling mentally foggy can be a symptom of depression.
Given your experiences, it is highly advisable to seek professional help. A mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist, can provide a thorough assessment and help you understand your feelings better. They can also offer therapy, which can be beneficial in processing your emotions and developing coping strategies.
In addition to professional help, consider the following steps to support your mental health:
- Talk to Someone: Reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or counselor. Sharing your feelings can provide relief and support.
- Engage in Physical Activity: Regular exercise can help improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression. Even a short walk can make a difference.
- Establish a Routine: Creating a daily routine can provide structure and a sense of normalcy, which can be comforting during difficult times.
- Practice Mindfulness or Relaxation Techniques: Activities such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises can help reduce anxiety and improve your mood.
- Limit Negative Influences: If certain people or situations exacerbate your feelings of sadness or anxiety, try to limit your exposure to them.
- Educate Yourself: Understanding depression and its symptoms can empower you to seek the right help and make informed decisions about your mental health.
Regarding your concerns about confidentiality, mental health professionals are bound by strict confidentiality laws, meaning that your information will be kept private unless there is a risk of harm to yourself or others.
In conclusion, it is essential to take your feelings seriously and seek help. You deserve support and understanding as you navigate this difficult time. Remember, reaching out for help is a sign of strength, and there are people who want to help you through this.
