Sudden Facial Acne: Causes and Treatment Options - Internal Medicine

Suddenly, a cluster of pimples appeared on one side of my face?

Initially, I had viral warts on my face, which were treated successfully with cryotherapy by a dermatologist.
However, another wart has developed on my face, and I am undergoing continuous treatment for it.
During the treatment for the viral warts, I suddenly broke out in numerous pimples on one side of my face.
The dermatologist prescribed me oral medication (Doxycycline capsules) and a topical gel.
I have also adjusted my sleep schedule.
I work in an environment with exposure to acidic substances and have a history of allergies, which makes me wonder if there are other contributing factors.
Could it be an endocrine issue? I have a friend who has had a similar experience.
Is it also possible that stress is a factor? I am currently still receiving treatment at the dermatology clinic and have not yet seen an internist.
Would you recommend that I visit an internal medicine specialist or an endocrinologist? Perhaps a metabolic specialist? Thank you for your kind response, doctor.

Dear readers, since you have already consulted a dermatologist, you may choose to see an endocrinologist, a family medicine physician, or a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
Thank you!

Understanding sudden facial acne can be quite complex, as it often involves a combination of factors including hormonal changes, stress, environmental influences, and underlying skin conditions. In your case, it appears that you have a history of viral warts treated with cryotherapy, which may have disrupted your skin's natural barrier and led to an acne outbreak.
Acne can be exacerbated by several factors, including hormonal fluctuations, particularly in individuals who may have underlying conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders. Stress is another significant contributor, as it can lead to increased oil production in the skin and exacerbate existing skin conditions. Additionally, environmental factors such as exposure to pollutants or irritants in your workplace could also play a role in the sudden appearance of acne.

The medication you mentioned, Doxycycline, is an antibiotic that is often prescribed for acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to reduce bacteria on the skin. The topical gel prescribed by your dermatologist likely contains ingredients aimed at reducing inflammation and unclogging pores. It's essential to follow your dermatologist's instructions regarding the use of these medications, as they can help manage your symptoms effectively.

Given your concerns about potential hormonal or metabolic issues, it may be beneficial to consult with an endocrinologist or a dermatologist who specializes in hormonal acne. They can evaluate your symptoms in the context of your overall health, including any hormonal imbalances that may be contributing to your skin issues. Blood tests can be conducted to assess hormone levels, and if any abnormalities are found, appropriate treatment can be initiated.

In the meantime, consider implementing a consistent skincare routine that includes gentle cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. Avoid harsh scrubs or products that can irritate your skin further. Additionally, managing stress through relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise can be beneficial for both your skin and overall well-being.

It's also important to monitor your diet, as certain foods can trigger acne in some individuals. Keeping a food diary may help you identify any potential dietary triggers. Foods high in sugar and dairy have been linked to acne in some studies, so you might want to evaluate your intake of these items.

In summary, the sudden appearance of acne on your face could be attributed to a combination of factors, including hormonal changes, stress, and environmental influences. Continuing your treatment with your dermatologist is crucial, and seeking further evaluation from an endocrinologist may provide additional insights into any underlying hormonal issues. Remember to maintain a gentle skincare routine and manage stress effectively to support your skin's health.
