Side effects of oral contraceptives?
Hello, I used the oral contraceptive "Yueji" in 2014.
I stopped taking it for a year because my menstrual cycle became regular.
At the end of 2016, I noticed my cycle became irregular again (having two periods in one month).
I immediately purchased "Yueji" again, but during the first month of use, I experienced continuous bleeding, which only normalized by the third month.
However, I noticed that "Yueji" caused weight gain, loss of appetite, nausea, and headaches.
I was alarmed and switched to "Yuezi" immediately after finishing the third month.
Now, in the first month of taking "Yuezi," the headaches and loss of appetite side effects have disappeared, but a more troubling issue has arisen: I am experiencing severe vaginal itching.
What should I do? Since I am abroad, I cannot return to my home country to see a doctor.

What should I do? Answer: Use vaginal tablets and antifungal cream.

Understanding the side effects of oral contraceptives can be quite complex, as individual responses to these medications can vary significantly. Your experience with the oral contraceptive "悦己" (Yueji) and later switching to "悦姿" (Yuezi) highlights some common issues that many women face when using hormonal birth control.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that hormonal contraceptives can affect the menstrual cycle in various ways. The irregularities you experienced, such as having two periods in one month, are not uncommon, especially after a period of discontinuation. When you resumed taking "悦己," the initial breakthrough bleeding you encountered is also a known side effect, particularly during the first few months of starting a new contraceptive. This is often due to the body adjusting to the hormonal changes.
Regarding the side effects you experienced with "悦己," such as weight gain, loss of appetite, nausea, and headaches, these are also well-documented reactions to hormonal contraceptives. The hormones in these pills can influence metabolism, appetite, and even mood, leading to such symptoms. It’s good to hear that when you switched to "悦姿," some of these side effects, particularly the headaches and appetite issues, resolved. However, the new symptom of severe vaginal itching is concerning and warrants attention.
Vaginal itching can be caused by several factors, including hormonal changes, yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, or even allergic reactions to the contraceptive itself. Hormonal contraceptives can alter the vaginal flora, making some women more susceptible to infections. Given that you are currently abroad and unable to see a doctor in person, here are some steps you can take:
1. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms that may accompany the itching, such as unusual discharge, odor, or irritation. This information can be helpful if you consult a healthcare provider later.
2. Over-the-Counter Treatments: Depending on the severity of the itching, you might consider over-the-counter antifungal creams or treatments for yeast infections, which are common causes of vaginal itching. However, be cautious and ensure that the product is suitable for your situation.
3. Hygiene Practices: Maintain good vaginal hygiene by avoiding scented soaps, douches, or other irritants that could exacerbate the itching. Wearing breathable cotton underwear and avoiding tight clothing can also help.
4. Consult a Local Healthcare Provider: If the itching persists or worsens, it’s important to seek medical advice from a local healthcare provider. Many countries have clinics that cater to expatriates or travelers, and they can provide guidance and treatment.
5. Consider Alternative Contraceptives: If the symptoms continue to be problematic, you may want to discuss alternative forms of contraception with a healthcare provider. There are many options available, including non-hormonal methods, which may not cause the same side effects.
In conclusion, while oral contraceptives can be effective for birth control and regulating menstrual cycles, they can also lead to a range of side effects. It’s crucial to listen to your body and seek medical advice when experiencing adverse reactions. Your health and comfort should always come first, and there are many resources available to help you manage these symptoms, even while abroad.
