Gonococcal pharyngitis
I recently underwent a comprehensive STI screening and found out that I have a gonorrhea infection.
I have been experiencing throat inflammation and have already visited a clinic for medication, but there has been no improvement.
Initially, I was worried about HIV, but then I came across information about gonococcal pharyngitis online.
Can this be completely cured? I have no symptoms in my genital area; is there a possibility of transmission to that area? All other STI tests came back normal.
If I need treatment, should my girlfriend accompany me? Thank you for your response, doctor.

Hello: When it comes to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), it is crucial to determine when the infection was transmitted, as different infections require different approaches.
For example, in the case of syphilis, all sexual partners should be tested.
For gonorrhea, testing and treatment should be conducted for partners with whom sexual contact occurred within the last 10 days.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info
Gonococcal pharyngitis, caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can lead to throat inflammation and discomfort. It is important to understand both the treatment options and the transmission dynamics associated with this infection.
Treatment of Gonococcal Pharyngitis
The standard treatment for gonococcal infections, including pharyngitis, typically involves antibiotics. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends dual therapy for gonorrhea, which usually consists of:
1. Ceftriaxone: An injectable antibiotic that is effective against Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
2. Azithromycin: An oral antibiotic that is often used in combination to enhance treatment efficacy and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
It is crucial to complete the entire course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication. This ensures that the infection is fully eradicated and helps prevent the development of antibiotic-resistant strains of the bacteria.
Transmission Concerns
Gonococcal pharyngitis is primarily transmitted through oral sex with an infected partner. While you mentioned that your genital area is asymptomatic, it is still possible to harbor the infection without showing symptoms. Asymptomatic infections are common with gonorrhea, and individuals can unknowingly transmit the infection to their partners.
Regarding your concern about whether you could infect your genital area, it is indeed possible. The bacteria can spread from the throat to the genital area, especially if oral sex is performed. Therefore, it is essential to get treated promptly to prevent further complications and transmission.
Partner Treatment
It is highly recommended that your sexual partner, in this case, your girlfriend, also gets tested and treated for gonorrhea, even if she does not show any symptoms. This is crucial for several reasons:
1. Preventing Reinfection: If only one partner is treated, there is a high risk of reinfection once sexual activity resumes.
2. Reducing Transmission: Treating both partners helps to eliminate the infection from both individuals, reducing the risk of spreading it to others.
3. Comprehensive Care: Your girlfriend may also need to be tested for other STIs, as co-infections are common.
Conclusion
In summary, gonococcal pharyngitis is treatable with appropriate antibiotics, and it is essential to follow the treatment regimen as prescribed. Given the nature of STIs, it is crucial for both you and your girlfriend to seek treatment to prevent further complications and transmission. Additionally, consider regular STI screenings in the future to maintain sexual health and safety. If you have any further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and support.
