There is a hard lump in the armpit?
Hello, I have noticed a red swollen lump at the edge of the left labial follicle for the past few months.
It hurts when I press on it, and sometimes it also hurts if my hand accidentally presses against it or when I stretch my arm.
I would like to know what could be the cause.
I usually do not use antiperspirants, but sometimes I use depilatory cream for hair removal.
I have seen other responses but didn't quite understand them.

More Info
When it comes to painful lumps in the armpit, there are several potential causes that one should consider. The symptoms you describe—a red, swollen lump that is painful to the touch and sometimes painful during certain movements—could indicate a few different conditions.
Possible Causes
1. Lymphadenopathy: One of the most common causes of lumps in the armpit is swollen lymph nodes. Lymph nodes can become enlarged due to infections (like a cold or flu), localized infections (such as a skin infection), or even more serious conditions like lymphoma. The pain you feel when pressing on the lump could be due to inflammation in the lymph nodes.
2. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by bacterial or fungal infections. If you have been using hair removal creams, this could irritate the skin and lead to folliculitis, resulting in painful lumps.
3. Cysts: Sebaceous cysts can form under the skin and may become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and swelling. These are generally benign but can be uncomfortable.
4. Abscess: If there is a localized collection of pus due to an infection, this can create a painful lump. Abscesses often require drainage and antibiotics.
5. Hidradenitis Suppurativa: This is a chronic skin condition that causes lumps under the skin, often in areas where skin rubs together, such as the armpits. It can be painful and may require specific treatments.
6. Other Conditions: Less commonly, lumps in the armpit can be caused by tumors, either benign or malignant.
When to See a Doctor
You should consider seeing a doctor if:
- The lump persists for more than a couple of weeks.
- The lump increases in size or becomes more painful.
- You experience other symptoms such as fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss.
- There is redness, warmth, or drainage from the lump, which could indicate an infection.
- You have a history of cancer or other serious health conditions.
Which Specialist to See
For your symptoms, it would be advisable to start with a primary care physician or a dermatologist. A primary care physician can evaluate your symptoms, perform a physical examination, and may order tests such as blood work or imaging studies if necessary. If the lump is determined to be related to skin issues, a dermatologist would be the appropriate specialist to consult. If lymphadenopathy is suspected, your doctor may refer you to an oncologist or a hematologist for further evaluation.
Conclusion
In summary, the painful lump you are experiencing in your armpit could be due to several causes, ranging from benign conditions like folliculitis or cysts to more serious issues like lymphadenopathy. It is important to monitor the lump and consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, especially if the cause is related to an infection or other treatable condition.
