Is bleeding that starts less than a month after surgery considered menstruation?
I had an abortion on March 15.
After researching online, I found that most people say it takes one to one and a half months for menstruation to return, but I started bleeding on April 2.
Is this normal? Does this count as my period? PS.
This was my fourth abortion, and it has been less than a year since the last procedure.

Dr. Huang Jianzhong reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
After an abortion procedure, the doctor will prescribe medication for 4 to 5 days.
The first method does not contain hormones, and with this method, menstruation will return in one to one and a half months.
The second method contains hormones, and with this method, menstruation will return in about half a month.
Your situation is likely related to the second method.
PS: Surgical abortion is not advisable.

Bleeding two weeks after an abortion can indeed be a source of confusion, especially when considering the typical expectations surrounding menstrual cycles post-procedure. It is important to understand that the timing of your first period after an abortion can vary significantly from person to person, and several factors can influence this timing.
Firstly, it is essential to clarify that what you are experiencing two weeks post-abortion may not necessarily be your first menstrual period. After an abortion, especially if it was a surgical procedure, the body undergoes a process of recovery and hormonal adjustment. The bleeding you are experiencing could be classified as post-abortal bleeding rather than a true menstrual period. This bleeding can occur as the uterus sheds its lining and any remaining tissue, which is a normal part of the recovery process.
Typically, many women may expect their first menstrual period to return within four to six weeks after an abortion. However, some women may experience bleeding sooner, as in your case. This early bleeding can be influenced by several factors, including:
1. Hormonal Changes: After an abortion, your hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone, can fluctuate significantly. These hormonal changes can lead to irregular bleeding patterns.
2. Previous Menstrual Cycle Regularity: If you had a regular menstrual cycle before the abortion, your body might return to its regular rhythm more quickly. However, if your cycles were irregular, it might take longer for your body to adjust.
3. Timing of the Abortion: The gestational age at which the abortion was performed can also play a role. In your case, since this was your fourth abortion and occurred within a year, your body may respond differently compared to previous experiences.
4. Individual Variability: Each person's body is unique, and individual health factors, including stress, overall health, and any underlying medical conditions, can affect recovery and the timing of menstrual cycles.
If the bleeding you are experiencing is similar in flow and duration to your regular menstrual periods, it is possible that your body is beginning to return to its normal cycle. However, if the bleeding is unusually heavy, prolonged, or accompanied by severe pain, it is crucial to seek medical attention. Such symptoms could indicate complications, such as retained tissue or infection, which may require further evaluation.
In conclusion, while it is not uncommon to experience bleeding two weeks after an abortion, it is essential to differentiate between post-abortal bleeding and the return of your menstrual cycle. If you have concerns about the nature of your bleeding or if it persists, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend an ultrasound or other diagnostic tests to ensure that your uterus has cleared properly and that there are no complications. Your health and well-being should always be the priority, and open communication with your healthcare provider is key to ensuring a smooth recovery.
