Am I pregnant?

Hello Doctor: My menstrual cycle has always been regular, usually starting around the 10th to 15th of each month.
After having sexual intercourse with my boyfriend in February (with a condom), my period was delayed in March and started on the 20th, lasting until about the 25th.
On April 7th, I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend again, without a condom, but there was no ejaculation and no orgasm; he just inserted briefly and then withdrew.
He assured me that he wiped off any pre-ejaculate before insertion, but I am worried he might have left some behind without me noticing.
On April 11th, I noticed a small amount of blood, which increased on April 12th, and then gradually decreased after April 13th.
As of today, April 18th, there is only a light yellow (brownish) discharge, with no odor and no itching in the genital area.
Is there a possibility that I could be pregnant? I was very anxious and took a pregnancy test on April 13th, which showed one line.
When should I take another pregnancy test?

Ahan, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/04/18

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the chances of pregnancy are low.
Generally, a pregnancy test should be taken at least 12 days after conception to yield accurate results.
It is always best to use preventive measures beforehand and not to rely on the safe period.
If you are still experiencing discomfort, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Based on the information you've provided, it seems that you are experiencing some anxiety regarding the possibility of pregnancy due to recent sexual activity and changes in your menstrual cycle. Let's break down your concerns and provide some clarity on the situation.

1. Understanding Irregular Periods: It is not uncommon for menstrual cycles to fluctuate, especially after a significant event such as sexual activity. Stress, hormonal changes, and even minor health issues can affect your cycle. In your case, the delay in your March period could be attributed to various factors, including stress or changes in your body.

2. Possibility of Pregnancy: Given that you had unprotected intercourse on April 7, there is a possibility of pregnancy, even if ejaculation did not occur inside you. Pre-ejaculate fluid (pre-cum) can contain sperm, and if any sperm were present, there is a risk of pregnancy. The light bleeding you experienced on April 11 could be implantation bleeding, which occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, but it could also be related to your menstrual cycle.

3. Testing for Pregnancy: You mentioned that you took a pregnancy test on April 13, which returned negative. Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable when taken after a missed period, but they can sometimes yield false negatives if taken too early. Since your period was due around April 10, it might be beneficial to wait a few days and test again. Testing in the morning with the first urine of the day can increase the accuracy of the result.

4. Timing for Retesting: If your period does not arrive by April 20, I recommend taking another pregnancy test. If you continue to experience unusual bleeding or if your period is significantly delayed, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

5. Symptoms to Watch For: If you are pregnant, some common early symptoms include nausea, breast tenderness, fatigue, and frequent urination. However, these symptoms can also be related to other factors, including hormonal changes or stress. If you experience severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, or any other concerning symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

6. Conclusion: While there is a possibility of pregnancy given the circumstances, the negative test result and the nature of your bleeding suggest that it may not be the case. However, your body is unique, and if you have any doubts or concerns, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and support.

In summary, monitor your symptoms, consider retesting if your period does not arrive, and do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for peace of mind and further guidance. Your health and well-being are the top priority, and professional advice can help clarify your situation.
