Do I have a chance to grow taller?

I am currently in my first year of high school and have started to grow 5-6 facial hairs in the past 2-3 months.
I am 170 cm tall, my father is 175 cm, and my mother is 168 cm.
Is there still a chance for me to grow taller?

Xiao Jun, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/04/19

Dr. Pei Rensheng reply Pediatrics

Xiao Jun: Hello, boys typically experience puberty between the ages of 12 and 17; once facial hair begins to grow, there is limited room for further growth.
The expected height for boys is calculated as the average height of the parents plus 6.5 cm.
For example, (175 cm + 168 cm) / 2 = 171.5 cm; 171.5 cm + 6.5 cm = 178 cm.
Factors such as exercise, nutrition, and illness can also influence growth.
It is advisable to visit a hospital to assess bone age and determine if there is still potential for growth.
Wishing you peace and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.

The question of whether you can still grow taller during high school is a common concern among adolescents, especially as they begin to notice physical changes like the growth of facial hair, which is often associated with puberty. At 17 years old and standing at 170 cm, you are at a stage where growth potential may still exist, but it is important to understand the factors that influence height growth.

Firstly, the growth plates in your bones, known as epiphyseal plates, play a crucial role in determining your height. These plates are areas of growing tissue near the ends of long bones. During puberty, these plates are still open, allowing for growth in height. However, as you approach the end of your teenage years, these plates gradually close, which typically occurs around the ages of 16 to 18 for males. If you have not yet had an X-ray to assess the status of your growth plates, it might be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider who can provide insight into whether they are still open.

Genetics also plays a significant role in determining your height. Given that your father is 175 cm and your mother is 168 cm, your height potential is likely influenced by these genetic factors. There are various methods to estimate your potential adult height, such as the mid-parental height calculation, which suggests that you might reach a height somewhere between your parents' heights, adjusted for your growth patterns.

In addition to genetics, nutrition and physical activity are critical components that can influence growth. A balanced diet rich in calcium, protein, and essential vitamins is vital for bone health and growth. Foods such as dairy products, lean meats, fish, fruits, and vegetables should be included in your daily meals. Regular physical activity, especially weight-bearing exercises like basketball, swimming, or jumping rope, can stimulate growth hormone production and promote healthy bone development.

Sleep is another essential factor that should not be overlooked. Growth hormone is primarily secreted during deep sleep, so ensuring you get adequate rest is crucial for maximizing your growth potential. Aim for 8 to 10 hours of quality sleep each night to support your body's growth processes.

While some individuals may experience growth spurts later in their teenage years or even into their early twenties, it is essential to have realistic expectations. The majority of growth typically occurs during the early to mid-teen years, and while there may still be some potential for growth, it is unlikely to be significant.

In conclusion, while there is still a possibility that you may grow taller, it is essential to focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep. If you have concerns about your growth or would like to explore your options further, consider consulting with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your individual circumstances. Remember, height is just one aspect of who you are, and embracing your unique qualities is equally important.
