Black spots at the base of the penis?
Hello Doctor: Recently, I noticed some growths near the base of my penis, which seem to be located close to the blood vessels.
I'm not sure how long they have been there; looking at photos from a few months ago, it seems like they were already present to some extent, and now they appear to have increased in number.
Initially, I thought they were hair follicles, as they have a dark color but are indented.
I have researched a lot but couldn't find any information about what they might be, so I would like to ask for your help.

Thank you.

Hello: It resembles a scar after wound healing, and it seems to have been present for some time.
If there is an increase in size or number, it is advisable to consult a urologist at the hospital.

When it comes to the appearance of black dots at the base of the penis, there are several potential causes that should be considered. First and foremost, it's important to note that any changes in the skin or appearance of the genital area should be evaluated by a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis. Here are some common causes for such symptoms:
1. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, benign bumps that can appear around the corona of the penis. They are often mistaken for warts or other lesions but are completely normal and do not require treatment.
2. Folliculitis: This condition occurs when hair follicles become inflamed, often due to infection or irritation. It can lead to the appearance of small, dark spots or bumps, especially if there is a history of shaving or friction in the area.
3. Sebaceous Cysts: These are small, non-cancerous lumps that can form under the skin. They are usually painless and can appear anywhere on the body, including the genital area. They may have a dark appearance if they become clogged or inflamed.
4. Hyperpigmentation: Sometimes, areas of the skin can become darker due to increased melanin production. This can occur for various reasons, including friction, hormonal changes, or skin conditions.
5. Skin Tags: These are small, benign growths that can appear in various areas of the body, including the genital region. They are usually flesh-colored or slightly darker and are not harmful.
6. Genital Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), these can appear as small, flesh-colored or dark bumps. If you suspect this, it is crucial to seek medical advice for appropriate testing and treatment.
7. Other Skin Conditions: Conditions such as psoriasis or eczema can also cause changes in skin appearance, including dark spots or patches.
Given that you mentioned these spots have been present for a few months and seem to be increasing in number, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider, preferably a dermatologist or urologist. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend a biopsy or other diagnostic tests if necessary to rule out any serious conditions.
In terms of treatment, it will depend on the underlying cause. For benign conditions like pearly penile papules or sebaceous cysts, no treatment may be necessary. However, if the spots are due to an infection or a sexually transmitted infection (STI), appropriate medical treatment will be required.
It's also important to maintain good hygiene and avoid any irritants that may exacerbate the condition. If you are experiencing any additional symptoms such as pain, itching, or discharge, these should be reported to your healthcare provider as they may indicate a more serious issue.
In summary, while there are several benign explanations for the appearance of black dots at the base of the penis, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is essential to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Your health and well-being should always be prioritized, and seeking medical advice is the best course of action when you notice changes in your body.
