There are intermittent spasms in the right chest?
Hello, two weeks ago I experienced a pulsating sensation in my right breast, which later felt like spasms, but I did not find any lumps.
This lasted for about 2 to 3 days and then resolved.
After approximately two weeks, the sensation has returned.
What could be the cause of this? Which specialist should I see? Thank you!

Dr. Zeng Guosen reply Internal Medicine
It is likely that the issue is related to a neuromuscular problem, and it is recommended to seek medical attention from a breast surgeon.
Thank you for your question.

More Info
Intermittent chest spasms can be concerning and may arise from various causes. The sensation you described, characterized by a feeling of pressure or spasms in the right chest area, can be attributed to several factors, including muscular, gastrointestinal, or even cardiac issues. It’s essential to consider the context of your symptoms, their duration, and any accompanying signs.
Possible Causes of Chest Spasms
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: One of the most common causes of chest spasms is related to the muscles and bones in the chest area. Conditions such as costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum) or muscle strain can lead to spasmodic sensations. If you've engaged in physical activity or experienced any trauma, this could be a likely cause.
2. Gastrointestinal Issues: Sometimes, gastrointestinal problems can manifest as chest discomfort. Conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or esophageal spasms can cause sensations that mimic chest pain or spasms. If you have noticed any correlation with meals or specific foods, this might be worth considering.
3. Anxiety and Stress: Psychological factors can also contribute to physical symptoms. Anxiety can lead to muscle tension and spasms, particularly in the chest area. If you have been experiencing stress or anxiety, this could be a contributing factor.
4. Cardiac Issues: While less common, it’s crucial to rule out any cardiac-related issues, especially if you have risk factors such as a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. Symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or radiating pain to the arm or jaw should prompt immediate medical attention.
When to Seek Help
Given that your symptoms have recurred, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Here are some guidelines on when to seek help:
- Persistent Symptoms: If the spasms continue or worsen, it’s essential to seek medical advice.
- Accompanying Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, sweating, or pain radiating to the arm, neck, or jaw, you should seek emergency medical attention immediately.
- Impact on Daily Life: If the spasms interfere with your daily activities or cause significant discomfort, it’s a good idea to consult a physician.
Which Specialist to See
For your symptoms, you may consider starting with a primary care physician who can evaluate your condition and refer you to the appropriate specialist if necessary. Depending on the findings, you might be referred to:
- Cardiologist: If there is any suspicion of heart-related issues.
- Gastroenterologist: If gastrointestinal problems are suspected.
- Pulmonologist: If there are concerns related to lung function.
- Musculoskeletal Specialist: If a musculoskeletal cause is suspected.
Conclusion
In summary, while intermittent chest spasms can stem from various causes, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely. Given the recurrence of your symptoms, consulting a healthcare professional is advisable to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate treatment. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so don’t hesitate to seek help.
