Will scars fade?
Three-quarters of an hour ago, a friend scratched the back of my hand vigorously, and after the scab fell off, the wound has slowly become slightly raised.
I have purchased Fucidin for use, and in the past few days, after applying the ointment, I have also used adhesive strips to help flatten the scar.
I read online that some scars may flatten on their own; is this possible in my case? I am very concerned...
Thank you, doctor, for taking the time to respond.

1.
Sometimes, scars can gradually fade.
This generally depends on the severity/depth of the injury at the time, the patient's constitution, and the patient's skincare regimen.
2.
Given this situation, it may take time and proper care for the scars to mature and soften, so it would be advisable to reassess in 6-8 months.

Scars can indeed fade over time, and understanding the healing process and treatment options can help you manage your concerns about scarring effectively. When the skin is injured, the body initiates a complex healing process that involves inflammation, tissue formation, and remodeling. The appearance of scars can vary based on several factors, including the type of injury, the depth of the wound, your skin type, and how well you care for the wound during the healing process.
In your case, it sounds like you have experienced a superficial injury to your hand, which has resulted in a scar that is slightly raised. This is not uncommon, especially with injuries that involve the dermis, the layer of skin where collagen and elastin fibers are located. When the skin heals, the body produces collagen to repair the damaged area, which can sometimes lead to a raised or thickened scar, known as a hypertrophic scar. Over time, many hypertrophic scars can flatten and fade as the collagen remodels and matures.
The use of topical treatments, such as silicone gel sheets (like the one you mentioned, "免縫膠帶") and ointments, can be beneficial in managing scars. Silicone gel is known to help hydrate the scar tissue and can reduce its appearance by flattening and softening the scar. It is essential to apply these treatments consistently and as directed for the best results. Additionally, keeping the scar moisturized can help improve its appearance.
While it is true that some scars can improve on their own over time, the extent of improvement can vary significantly from person to person. Factors such as age, skin type, and the location of the scar can influence how well a scar fades. Younger skin tends to heal more effectively, while scars on areas of the body that experience more movement may take longer to heal and may be more pronounced.
If you are concerned about the appearance of your scar, there are several treatment options available beyond topical treatments. These include:
1. Laser Therapy: Laser treatments can help reduce the redness and texture of scars. They work by targeting the blood vessels in the scar tissue and stimulating collagen remodeling.
2. Microneedling: This procedure involves using fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, promoting collagen production and improving the texture of the scar.
3. Steroid Injections: For raised scars, corticosteroid injections can help flatten the scar and reduce inflammation.
4. Surgical Revision: In some cases, surgical options may be considered to remove or revise the scar, especially if it is particularly bothersome.
5. Chemical Peels: These can help improve the appearance of scars by removing the outer layer of skin and promoting new skin growth.
It is essential to consult with a dermatologist or a healthcare professional who specializes in scar treatment to determine the best course of action for your specific situation. They can assess your scar and recommend appropriate treatments based on its characteristics and your skin type.
In summary, while scars can fade over time, the process can vary widely among individuals. Consistent care with topical treatments, along with professional options if necessary, can significantly improve the appearance of your scar. Don't hesitate to seek professional advice to explore the best treatment options for your needs.
