Redness, swelling, and itching at the site of the BCG vaccine injection?
Recently, I've suddenly felt a lot of itching in the upper part of my arm.
A friend noticed that the area where I received the BCG vaccine has swollen.
Is this a sign of something or an infection? My daily routine has been normal, and I haven't come into contact with anything unusual.
Today is already the third day, and aside from the redness, swelling, and itching, I don't feel any other discomfort.

For children, if there is redness and swelling accompanied by a high fever lasting more than five days, Kawasaki disease should be considered.
It is relatively less common in adults.
If there is only redness and swelling without other symptoms, observation may be appropriate; in adults, allergies or localized cellulitis should be considered first.
If there is discomfort, please seek further evaluation and treatment from a dermatologist or family medicine physician.
Wishing you good health, Dr.

More Info
After receiving the BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) vaccine, it is not uncommon to experience some localized reactions at the injection site, including redness, swelling, and itching. These symptoms are generally considered normal and are part of the body's immune response to the vaccine. The BCG vaccine is primarily used to protect against tuberculosis, and it contains a weakened strain of the bacterium that causes the disease.
Understanding the Symptoms
1. Localized Reaction: The redness and swelling you are experiencing are typical responses to the BCG vaccine. This reaction occurs as your immune system recognizes the vaccine components and begins to mount a defense against them. The itching sensation can also be attributed to the inflammatory response in the skin.
2. Timeline: Reactions to the BCG vaccine can occur within a few days after administration. The fact that you are on the third day post-vaccination and experiencing these symptoms aligns with the expected timeline for a localized reaction.
3. Severity and Duration: Most localized reactions are mild and resolve on their own within a week or two. However, if the redness and swelling worsen or if you develop additional symptoms such as fever, pus, or significant pain, it may indicate an infection or an allergic reaction, and you should seek medical advice.
When to Seek Medical Attention
While localized reactions are common, there are certain signs that warrant a visit to a healthcare provider:
- Increased Redness or Swelling: If the area continues to swell or becomes increasingly red, it may suggest an infection.
- Pus or Discharge: The presence of pus or any unusual discharge from the injection site is a sign of infection.
- Fever or Systemic Symptoms: If you develop a fever, chills, or other systemic symptoms, it is important to consult a healthcare professional.
- Severe Pain: If the injection site becomes very painful, this could indicate a more serious reaction.
Prevention and Care
To manage the symptoms you are experiencing, consider the following:
- Avoid Scratching: Itching can be bothersome, but scratching can lead to further irritation or infection.
- Cool Compress: Applying a cool compress to the area may help reduce swelling and soothe itching.
- Over-the-Counter Remedies: Antihistamines or topical hydrocortisone creams can help alleviate itching and discomfort, but consult with a healthcare provider before using any medication.
Conclusion
In summary, the redness and itching you are experiencing after your BCG vaccination are likely normal and indicative of your immune system responding to the vaccine. However, it is essential to monitor the symptoms and seek medical attention if they worsen or if you develop additional concerning symptoms. Always feel free to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance regarding your vaccination and any reactions you may experience.
