Is it normal to experience itching after cryotherapy for warts?

Hello, doctor! I just completed cryotherapy for warts three days ago, and the area around the warts is extremely itchy, like millions of ants are crawling on it.
It is now the fourth day, and it is still very itchy.
Is this normal? Thank you!

Hello: After cryotherapy, the skin around the viral wart may sometimes develop blisters or scabs.
Generally, pain is more common than itching.
It is recommended that you return for follow-up treatment.
Thank you!

More Info

Experiencing itching after wart cryotherapy is a common occurrence and can be considered a normal part of the healing process. Cryotherapy, which involves freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen, causes the skin to undergo a series of changes as it heals. This can lead to inflammation and irritation in the treated area, resulting in sensations such as itching, redness, and swelling.

The itching you are experiencing is likely due to the body’s natural response to the trauma inflicted by the cryotherapy. When the skin is frozen and then thawed, it can trigger a release of histamines, which are chemicals involved in the inflammatory response. Histamines can cause itching and discomfort as they signal the body to heal the affected area. Additionally, as the wart begins to die and the skin regenerates, the surrounding skin may become dry or irritated, further contributing to the itching sensation.

It is important to avoid scratching the area, as this can lead to further irritation or even infection. Instead, you can try to alleviate the itching by applying a cold compress to the area or using over-the-counter antihistamines or hydrocortisone cream, which can help reduce inflammation and itching. However, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider before using any topical treatments to ensure they are appropriate for your specific situation.

Typically, the itching should subside as the skin heals, which may take several days to a couple of weeks, depending on the individual and the extent of the treatment. If the itching persists beyond this timeframe or if you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), it is important to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, while itching after wart cryotherapy is normal, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and practice good skin care to promote healing. If you have any concerns or if the symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance.
