Pinky joint pain
Hello doctor, my right hand's little finger has been experiencing pain on the right side of the second joint.
Sometimes it hurts a lot, and other times just a little.
It hurts when I bend it, and it also hurts when I lightly touch it.
What could this symptom be? It has been 3 days!

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
It could be due to overuse inflammation or it may be a result of a collision or contusion.

More Info
Understanding pain in the right pinky finger joint, particularly in the second joint, can be quite concerning, especially when it affects your daily activities. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing intermittent pain that can be triggered by movement or even light touch. This type of pain can arise from several potential causes, and it’s important to consider these possibilities to determine the best course of action.
1. Possible Causes:
- Joint Injury: If you have recently engaged in activities that put stress on your pinky finger, such as sports or manual labor, you may have sustained a minor injury or strain. This could lead to inflammation in the joint, resulting in pain during movement.
- Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendons around the finger joint can cause pain, especially when bending or applying pressure. This is often seen in repetitive motion activities.
- Arthritis: Conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can cause joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. Given that you mentioned the pain is sometimes severe, it’s worth considering this possibility, especially if you have a family history of arthritis.
- Nerve Compression: Sometimes, nerve issues can lead to pain in the fingers. Conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome can cause referred pain to the pinky finger.
- Infection: Although less common, an infection in the joint or surrounding tissues can cause significant pain and swelling. If you notice redness, warmth, or fever, this should be evaluated immediately.
2. Self-Care and Management:
- Rest: Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain. Giving your finger a break can help reduce inflammation.
- Ice Therapy: Applying ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes several times a day can help reduce swelling and numb the pain.
- Elevation: Keeping your hand elevated can help decrease swelling.
- Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.
- Gentle Stretching: Once the acute pain subsides, gentle stretching and strengthening exercises may help restore function and prevent stiffness.
3. When to Seek Medical Attention:
- If the pain persists beyond a few days without improvement, or if it worsens, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, such as X-rays, to rule out fractures or other underlying conditions.
- If you experience symptoms such as significant swelling, redness, warmth, or fever, seek medical attention promptly, as these may indicate an infection or more serious condition.
4. Preventive Measures:
- If you engage in activities that put stress on your fingers, consider using protective gear or modifying your technique to reduce strain.
- Regular hand and finger exercises can improve flexibility and strength, potentially preventing future injuries.
In conclusion, while the pain in your right pinky finger joint could stem from various causes, understanding the nature of the pain and implementing self-care strategies can be beneficial. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, seeking professional medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment.
