Frequent belching?

Since the second year of high school, I initially only experienced belching when I was about 80% full, but gradually I began to belch regardless of how much I ate.
Two months ago, I experienced bloating to the point of wanting to vomit, so I went to see a doctor.
The doctor prescribed medication for bloating and a self-paid medication called Nizatidine, which helped somewhat.
Following the doctor's advice, I increased my physical activity and adjusted my diet to avoid foods that are prone to causing bloating.
However, recently it seems to have started again; whenever I sit for a long time and then stand up, I inevitably belch.
Sometimes I experience pain in the upper middle abdomen, but it doesn't last long—just a minute or two.
By the way, I previously had a throat inflammation, but after it healed, I experienced pain again shortly after.
I have considered whether it could be acid reflux, but I do not feel any symptoms of acid reflux.
Could this be caused by indigestion and slow gastrointestinal motility, or is it due to excessive stress?

Hello: Indigestion and slow gastrointestinal motility can result in prolonged food retention in the stomach.
Excessive stress may lead to increased gastric acid production or gastric spasms.
Therefore, the exact cause of your symptoms remains uncertain; however, it is recommended to take a multifaceted approach to reduce the occurrence of symptoms.

Frequent belching can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience, and it often raises concerns about underlying digestive issues. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing this symptom for quite some time, and it has been accompanied by other digestive complaints such as bloating and occasional abdominal pain. Let's delve into the potential causes and solutions for your situation.

Possible Causes of Frequent Belching
1. Aerophagia: This is a common cause of excessive belching, where air is swallowed while eating, drinking, or even talking. If you tend to eat quickly or talk while eating, you may be swallowing more air than usual, leading to increased belching.

2. Dietary Factors: Certain foods and beverages can contribute to gas production in the digestive system. Foods that are high in fiber, such as beans, lentils, and certain vegetables (like broccoli and cabbage), can cause gas. Carbonated drinks can also introduce excess air into your stomach.

3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Although you mentioned not experiencing acid reflux, GERD can sometimes present with belching as a symptom. The lower esophageal sphincter may relax inappropriately, allowing air to escape from the stomach.

4. Functional Dyspepsia: This is a condition characterized by chronic indigestion without an identifiable cause. Symptoms can include bloating, belching, and discomfort in the upper abdomen.

5. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): IBS is a functional gastrointestinal disorder that can lead to symptoms such as bloating, gas, and altered bowel habits. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate these symptoms.

6. Gastroparesis: This condition involves delayed gastric emptying, which can lead to feelings of fullness, bloating, and belching. It is often associated with diabetes but can occur for other reasons as well.

7. Stress and Anxiety: Psychological factors can significantly impact digestive health. Stress can lead to changes in eating habits, increased air swallowing, and alterations in gut motility, all of which can contribute to belching.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Dietary Modifications: Keep a food diary to identify any specific foods that may trigger your symptoms. Consider reducing your intake of carbonated beverages, high-fiber foods, and other known gas-producing items. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can also help.

2. Eating Habits: Try to eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly. Avoid talking while eating to minimize air swallowing. Additionally, consider avoiding straws and chewing gum, as these can also lead to swallowing air.

3. Physical Activity: Regular physical activity can help promote healthy digestion and reduce bloating. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.

4. Stress Management: Since stress can exacerbate digestive issues, incorporating stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or deep breathing exercises may be beneficial.

5. Medical Evaluation: If your symptoms persist despite making these changes, it may be wise to consult a gastroenterologist. They can perform diagnostic tests, such as an upper endoscopy or gastric emptying study, to rule out any underlying conditions.

6. Medications: If your doctor has prescribed medications for bloating and gas, continue to take them as directed. Over-the-counter options like simethicone may also provide relief.

7. Follow-Up: Since you mentioned previous throat inflammation, it might be worthwhile to discuss this with your healthcare provider to ensure there are no lingering issues that could be contributing to your symptoms.

In conclusion, frequent belching can stem from a variety of causes, including dietary habits, digestive disorders, and stress. By making mindful adjustments to your eating habits, managing stress, and seeking medical advice when necessary, you can work towards alleviating your symptoms and improving your digestive health. If you have any further concerns or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized guidance.
