Blood in the stool?
Doctor: I would like to ask about a recent issue.
Over the past few weeks, I've noticed some blood after bowel movements.
It's not blood mixed with the stool, but rather blood observed after the bowel movement and also when wiping.
This has happened three times between April 22 and May 16, approximately every two weeks.
There is no pain associated with it.
What could be the possible causes? Should I see a doctor?
s, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/05/16

This situation likely indicates a higher possibility of hemorrhoidal bleeding.
As long as there is no further bleeding, it should not be a concern.
It is recommended to avoid constipation during this period and to shorten the time spent on the toilet.
Warm sitz baths may help alleviate symptoms.
You can also purchase hemorrhoid suppositories at the pharmacy and use stool softeners.
However, it is best not to take medications indiscriminately.
If bleeding persists, it is advisable to consult a physician for evaluation.

More Info
Experiencing blood after bowel movements can be concerning, and it's important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical attention. Based on your description, it seems that you have observed blood on the toilet paper after wiping, rather than mixed with the stool itself. This detail can help narrow down the possible causes.
One of the most common reasons for blood on toilet paper is hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectal area that can become inflamed and bleed, especially during bowel movements. They can cause discomfort, itching, and sometimes pain, but not always. Given that you mentioned there is no pain associated with the bleeding, hemorrhoids could still be a likely cause, particularly if you have a history of constipation or straining during bowel movements.
Another possibility is anal fissures, which are small tears in the lining of the anus. These can occur due to passing hard stools and can cause bleeding, often accompanied by sharp pain during bowel movements. However, since you indicated that there is no pain, this may be less likely.
Less commonly, bleeding could be a sign of more serious conditions such as diverticular disease, colorectal polyps, or even colorectal cancer, especially if the bleeding persists or is accompanied by other symptoms such as changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, or abdominal pain.
Given that you have experienced this bleeding intermittently over a few weeks, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. While it may not be an emergency, a doctor can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination and possibly further tests such as a colonoscopy, especially if there are any concerning signs or if the bleeding continues.
In summary, while the most common causes of blood after bowel movements are often benign, such as hemorrhoids or anal fissures, it is essential to have any new or unusual symptoms evaluated by a healthcare provider. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment or lifestyle changes to help prevent future occurrences. Don't hesitate to seek medical advice, as early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and peace of mind.
