It feels like someone is choking my throat, making it difficult to breathe?
Hello Doctor: This symptom has been occurring for a while, with an unknown trigger.
It feels similar to a muscle spasm, but the difference is that it feels like someone is squeezing my neck, making it difficult to breathe.
Sometimes it happens when I brush my tongue and stick it out, and other times it occurs suddenly.
The episodes last for several minutes, during which I am unable to speak or breathe properly, and my entire neck feels tense.
I have no idea what is happening to me or which specialist I should see.
Thank you for your help.

Feeling choked or experiencing throat tightness can be a distressing symptom that may arise from various underlying causes. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing episodes of tightness in your throat that make it difficult to breathe and speak, which can be quite alarming. This sensation can be associated with several medical conditions, including anxiety disorders, panic attacks, and even physical issues related to the throat or respiratory system.
One of the most common explanations for the sensation of throat tightness is anxiety. When individuals experience anxiety or panic attacks, they may feel a range of physical symptoms, including a tight throat, difficulty breathing, and a sense of choking. This can happen because anxiety triggers the body's fight-or-flight response, leading to muscle tension and changes in breathing patterns. The feeling of tightness in the throat can be exacerbated by hyperventilation, which is common during panic attacks. Hyperventilation can lead to a decrease in carbon dioxide levels in the blood, causing further sensations of tightness and discomfort.
Another potential cause of your symptoms could be related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD can cause acid to flow back into the esophagus, leading to irritation and a sensation of tightness in the throat. This can sometimes be mistaken for anxiety-related symptoms. Additionally, conditions such as allergies, asthma, or even infections can lead to throat tightness and difficulty breathing.
Given that your symptoms can occur during specific activities, such as brushing your tongue, it may also be worth considering if there is a physical trigger involved. For instance, gagging or a strong gag reflex can lead to a temporary sensation of choking or tightness in the throat.
It is essential to address these symptoms with a healthcare professional. I recommend starting with a visit to a primary care physician or an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can conduct a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly some diagnostic tests, to rule out any underlying medical conditions. If anxiety is suspected to be a significant factor, a referral to a mental health professional may be beneficial. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is often effective for managing anxiety and panic symptoms.
In the meantime, practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, or progressive muscle relaxation can help manage anxiety and reduce the frequency of these episodes. Staying hydrated and avoiding known triggers, such as certain foods or stressful situations, may also be helpful.
In summary, throat tightness and breathing issues can stem from various causes, including anxiety, physical conditions, or even specific triggers. It is crucial to seek medical advice to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Remember, you are not alone in experiencing these symptoms, and there are effective strategies and treatments available to help you manage them.
