Strange pain
Hello, doctor: Recently, I have noticed a dull pain in my penis that comes and goes.
Sometimes I don't feel anything when I'm not touching it, but there is a slight pain when I do touch it.
I also discovered that during an erection, there seems to be a tight band or blood vessel along the upper side of the penis, and when I touch it, I can clearly feel it is located beneath the skin.
I can also feel this "vein" when I'm not erect.
Should I seek medical treatment promptly? I couldn't find any definitive information online regarding the cause.

Hello: It's rare to see this in an outpatient setting; there may be other issues, such as injury or inflammation, so it might be better to seek medical attention.

More Info
Experiencing unusual penile pain can be concerning, and it’s important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical attention. Based on your description, the pain you are experiencing seems to be intermittent and associated with certain conditions, such as an erection or physical touch. This could indicate a variety of underlying issues, ranging from benign to more serious conditions.
Possible Causes of Penile Pain
1. Peyronie's Disease: This condition is characterized by the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, which can cause curved, painful erections. The "tight" feeling along the shaft you mentioned may be related to this condition, especially if it is accompanied by changes in the shape of the penis during an erection.
2. Infection or Inflammation: Conditions such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) or urethritis (inflammation of the urethra) can cause pain and discomfort. These conditions may be associated with redness, swelling, or discharge.
3. Vascular Issues: Pain during an erection could also be related to vascular problems, such as thrombosis of the veins or arteries supplying the penis. This can lead to a feeling of tightness or discomfort.
4. Nerve Compression or Injury: Sometimes, nerve-related issues can cause pain in the genital area. This could be due to compression or irritation of the nerves that supply sensation to the penis.
5. Trauma or Injury: If there has been any recent trauma to the genital area, even minor, it could lead to pain or discomfort.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Given that you have been experiencing this pain for a week and it is associated with erections and touch, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Here are some specific reasons to see a healthcare provider:
- Persistent Pain: If the pain continues or worsens, it is important to get evaluated.
- Changes in Erection: If you notice any changes in your ability to achieve or maintain an erection, this could indicate a more serious issue.
- Visible Changes: If you see any lumps, bumps, or changes in the skin of the penis, this warrants a medical evaluation.
- Accompanying Symptoms: If you experience any other symptoms such as swelling, redness, discharge, or fever, you should seek medical care promptly.
What to Expect at the Doctor's Office
When you visit a healthcare provider, they will likely perform a physical examination and may ask about your medical history, sexual history, and any other symptoms you may be experiencing. Depending on the findings, they may recommend further tests, such as:
- Ultrasound: To assess blood flow and check for any abnormalities in the tissue.
- Blood Tests: To rule out infections or other systemic issues.
- Referral to a Specialist: If necessary, you may be referred to a urologist for further evaluation and management.
Conclusion
In summary, while some causes of penile pain can be benign, it is essential to take any persistent or unusual symptoms seriously. Given your description of the pain and the tightness you feel, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider as soon as possible. Early diagnosis and treatment can help address any underlying issues and prevent potential complications. Remember, your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking medical advice is a proactive step towards understanding and resolving your symptoms.
