The wisdom tooth line has not been properly removed?

After having my wisdom teeth removed, I accidentally lost the stitches.
A week later, I went to the doctor for a check-up, and the doctor said he couldn't see any stitches and told me not to worry.
However, a month later, I felt something stuck in the hole where my wisdom tooth was, and when I looked in the mirror, I discovered a black thread.
If this is indeed a stitch that wasn't removed properly, what could be the potential effects?

After wisdom tooth extraction, it is common for patients to have concerns about the stitches (sutures) used during the procedure. If the stitches are not removed properly or dissolve as expected, there can be several implications for healing and recovery.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that there are two types of sutures used in dental procedures: absorbable and non-absorbable. Absorbable sutures are designed to dissolve on their own over time, typically within a week or two, while non-absorbable sutures need to be removed by a dentist or oral surgeon. If you have accidentally dislodged your stitches and your dentist confirmed that they were not visible during your follow-up visit, it is likely that they were absorbable and have already dissolved. However, if you are seeing a black thread-like material in the extraction site after a month, it could be a remnant of the suture or possibly food debris.

If the remaining material is indeed a piece of suture, it may not pose a significant risk, but it can lead to some complications. Here are some potential impacts of having unremoved wisdom tooth stitches:
1. Infection: Any foreign material left in the extraction site can increase the risk of infection. If bacteria are able to colonize around the suture, it can lead to localized infection, which may present as swelling, increased pain, or discharge from the site.

2. Delayed Healing: The presence of unremoved sutures can interfere with the normal healing process. The body may react to the foreign material, leading to inflammation and potentially prolonging the recovery time.

3. Abscess Formation: In some cases, if an infection develops, it can lead to the formation of an abscess, which is a collection of pus that can cause significant pain and swelling. This may require further treatment, including drainage and antibiotics.

4. Discomfort: If the suture is causing irritation to the surrounding tissues, it may lead to discomfort or pain in the area. This can affect your ability to eat, speak, or maintain oral hygiene.

5. Granulation Tissue Formation: Sometimes, the body may form granulation tissue around the foreign material as part of the healing process. While this is a natural response, it can lead to a lump or bump at the extraction site.

If you suspect that there is still a piece of suture in your mouth, it is essential to consult your dentist or oral surgeon. They can perform a thorough examination and, if necessary, remove any remaining material. It’s also important to monitor the extraction site for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge.
In summary, while having unremoved wisdom tooth stitches can lead to complications, the best course of action is to seek professional evaluation. Your dentist will be able to determine the nature of the material you are seeing and provide appropriate treatment to ensure proper healing. Always prioritize your oral health and don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider with any concerns.
