Traditional Chinese Medicine and Contraceptive Pills

I would like to ask the doctor, I have been taking birth control pills for almost a year now, specifically the over-the-counter brand "Yueji." Recently, I have noticed a decrease in my hair volume.
My mother is suggesting that I see a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for some treatment.
I would like to know if taking birth control pills and Chinese medicine together would conflict and potentially affect the effectiveness of the contraceptive.
Also, does Chinese medicine really help to increase hair volume?

YUN, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/05/25

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Dear YUN,
Thank you for your message.
It is recommended to take contraceptive pills and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) at least one hour apart; TCM will not affect the contraceptive effectiveness.
At the age of 20, experiencing hair loss should not be common.
To increase hair volume, in addition to taking TCM to improve your overall health, you should also pay attention to your lifestyle habits (such as staying up late, dieting, and having an unbalanced diet), mental stress (from work, exams, or relationship issues), and how you treat your hair (such as perming, dyeing, or using styling products).
These factors all contribute to hair growth.

Wishing you health and peace!
Sincerely,

When it comes to the interaction between herbal medicine and birth control pills, it is essential to understand how these substances can affect each other and the overall efficacy of contraception. You mentioned that you have been taking a birth control pill for almost a year and are considering herbal remedies to address your concerns about hair loss.
Firstly, it is important to note that many herbal medicines can potentially interact with hormonal contraceptives. For example, certain herbs like St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) are known to induce liver enzymes that can metabolize contraceptive hormones more quickly, potentially reducing the effectiveness of the birth control pill. This means that if you were to take such herbs while on the pill, you might be at an increased risk of unintended pregnancy. However, not all herbal remedies have this effect, and many do not significantly impact the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives.

Regarding your specific situation with the herbal medicine you are considering, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider, preferably one who is knowledgeable about both Western medicine and herbal treatments. They can provide guidance on which specific herbs you are considering and whether they have any known interactions with your birth control pill.
In terms of hair loss, there are various reasons why you might be experiencing this issue, including hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, stress, or underlying medical conditions. Some herbal remedies, such as saw palmetto or ginseng, are often touted for their potential benefits in promoting hair growth. However, the scientific evidence supporting these claims is mixed, and results can vary from person to person.
Additionally, it is essential to consider that while some herbs may help improve hair health, they may also have side effects or interact with other medications you are taking. Therefore, it is advisable to approach herbal treatments with caution and under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.

In summary, if you are considering taking herbal medicine while on birth control pills, it is vital to:
1. Consult with a healthcare provider to discuss potential interactions and ensure that the herbal remedies you are considering will not compromise the effectiveness of your birth control.

2. Explore the underlying causes of your hair loss with a healthcare professional who can provide a comprehensive evaluation and recommend appropriate treatments, which may include lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, or specific medical interventions.

3. Be cautious about self-prescribing herbal remedies, as they can have varying effects on individuals and may not be suitable for everyone.

By taking these steps, you can make informed decisions about your health and well-being while ensuring that your contraceptive method remains effective.
