Regarding the issue of growing taller and consequently losing weight?

Hello, Doctor: I am 12 years old and will be entering the second year of junior high school.
I got my period in the fifth grade.
I’m not sure if it’s because I stay up late, but I haven’t grown much in recent years.
My parents are worried and want to take me for injections...
(My dad is 165 cm, my mom is 147 cm, neither of them is very tall, but my brother has grown to 174 cm...) I have been doing aerobic exercises to grow taller and lose weight, but it seems like there hasn’t been much effect.
Could it be because I’m not getting enough sleep due to staying up late? What methods can help me grow from 151 cm to 158 cm? Or is it already too late? Can I lose weight while growing taller? (My brother lost quite a bit of weight as he grew taller.) I urgently need a response as I’m afraid I might miss my growth period.
Thank you for your help.

The growth plates in girls typically close around the age of 14, so there is still a chance for them to grow taller.
Sufficient sleep is essential, and exercise and nutrition are also very important.

Height growth during adolescence is a complex process influenced by various factors, including genetics, nutrition, physical activity, and sleep. As you are currently 12 years old and preparing to enter the second year of junior high school, it is essential to understand how sleep and exercise can impact your growth potential.

Firstly, let's address the role of sleep in growth. Sleep is crucial for overall health and development, especially during the growth spurts of adolescence. During deep sleep, the body releases growth hormone, which plays a significant role in increasing height. Insufficient sleep can hinder this process, potentially leading to stunted growth. If you are consistently staying up late and getting inadequate sleep, it could indeed be affecting your growth. Experts recommend that adolescents get at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night to support optimal growth and development.

In your case, if you have been experiencing irregular sleep patterns and not getting enough rest, it is advisable to establish a consistent sleep schedule. Aim to go to bed earlier and create a calming bedtime routine to help improve your sleep quality. Reducing screen time before bed can also help, as the blue light emitted by devices can interfere with your ability to fall asleep.

Now, regarding exercise, regular physical activity is beneficial for overall health and can support growth. Engaging in aerobic exercises, such as running, swimming, or cycling, can help improve your cardiovascular health and strengthen your muscles. Additionally, activities that promote stretching and posture, like yoga or gymnastics, can also be beneficial. However, it's important to note that while exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight and improve your overall fitness, it alone may not significantly increase your height if other factors, such as genetics and sleep, are not adequately addressed.

You mentioned that your parents are not particularly tall, which suggests that genetics may play a role in your height potential. However, it's important to remember that growth patterns can vary widely among siblings. Your brother's height of 174 cm indicates that there may be potential for growth in your family, even if your parents are shorter.

As for your goal of growing from 151 cm to 158 cm, it is certainly possible, especially since you are still in your growth years. While it may be challenging to predict exact height outcomes, focusing on a balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep can help maximize your growth potential. Eating a nutritious diet rich in calcium, protein, and vitamins is essential for bone health and growth. Foods like dairy products, lean meats, fruits, and vegetables should be included in your meals.

Lastly, regarding your concern about weight loss, it is important to approach this in a healthy manner. Growing taller can sometimes lead to changes in body composition, but it is crucial to prioritize your health over weight loss. Instead of focusing solely on losing weight, aim for a balanced lifestyle that includes healthy eating and regular physical activity.

In conclusion, while genetics will play a significant role in your final height, you can still take proactive steps to support your growth. Prioritize getting enough sleep, engage in regular exercise, and maintain a balanced diet. If you have ongoing concerns about your growth or health, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and support.
