Post-Surgery Concerns: Complications After Breast Tumor Removal - Surgery

Postoperative complications following chest surgery?

Hello, I previously asked a question that wasn't very clear, so I'm inquiring again.
I underwent a traditional outpatient surgical biopsy where the entire mass tumor was removed.
The examination indicated that it was irregular and had increased in size within a short period, measuring over 1 cm.
The doctor recommended removal for biopsy.
The mass is located about 3 cm away from the nipple, which isn't considered close, right? The surgical wound is healing well, but I noticed that when I squeeze the nipple post-surgery, blood is discharged.
I would like to know if this is a common occurrence after a traditional breast mass biopsy, or if it is considered normal.
I searched online but couldn't find similar cases, so I wanted to ask.
Thank you!

yu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/06/07

Dr. Li Zhonghuai reply Surgery

Hello! It is recommended to return for a follow-up to check if there are any residual blood clots at the site of the original mass.
If there is no infection, it can actually be resolved quite easily.
Take care! Changhua Hospital is concerned about you!

Post-surgery concerns, especially after breast tumor removal, are quite common and can encompass a range of issues, including pain, healing, and the risk of recurrence. It’s important to understand that every surgical procedure carries inherent risks and potential complications, and breast surgery is no exception.

Firstly, regarding your concern about bleeding from the nipple after surgery, it is not typical for this to occur, especially if the surgery was performed correctly and the healing process is on track. However, some degree of discharge or bleeding can happen in the early stages of recovery, particularly if there is irritation or if the surgical site is still healing. The presence of blood when expressing the nipple could indicate several things, including residual effects from the surgery, irritation of the tissue, or even a possible complication such as an infection or hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels). It’s crucial to monitor this symptom closely. If the bleeding persists, increases, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, increased pain, or swelling, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately for further evaluation.

In terms of the risk of recurrence, it is essential to follow your doctor's recommendations regarding follow-up care. The likelihood of recurrence can depend on various factors, including the type of tumor, its size, and whether it had spread to nearby lymph nodes. Regular follow-ups, including imaging studies like ultrasounds or mammograms (as appropriate), are vital for early detection of any potential recurrence. Since you mentioned that the tumor was irregular and had increased in size, it is particularly important to adhere to your follow-up schedule and any additional testing your doctor recommends.

As for the healing process, it is normal to experience some discomfort or sensitivity in the breast area after surgery. The body goes through a significant healing process, and nerve endings may be sensitive during this time. If you experience persistent pain or unusual sensations, it is advisable to discuss these with your healthcare provider. They may recommend pain management strategies or physical therapy to help with recovery.

Regarding your question about the surgical technique, traditional excisional biopsy or tumor removal can lead to scarring and changes in breast tissue. Some patients may experience changes in nipple sensitivity or appearance post-surgery. If you notice any significant changes in the shape or texture of your breast, or if you have concerns about the appearance of your nipple, these should also be discussed with your doctor.

Lastly, it’s important to maintain open communication with your healthcare team. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation, including any necessary lifestyle modifications, exercises to promote healing, and strategies to manage any side effects you may experience. If you have any doubts or concerns about your recovery, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. They are there to support you through your recovery process and ensure that you have the best possible outcome following your surgery.
