When does pregnancy occur?

I was supposed to get my period on February 25, but it didn't come.
Since my menstrual cycle has always been irregular, I didn't take a pregnancy test until April 4, when I found out I was pregnant.
I then went to see an obstetrician, who said I was already over 2 months pregnant.
So when exactly did I conceive? I am now 15-16 weeks along, which is about 4 and a half months.

Bao, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/06/12

Determining the exact timing of conception can be quite complex, especially for individuals with irregular menstrual cycles. In your case, you mentioned that your last menstrual period (LMP) was expected on February 25, but it did not arrive. You took a pregnancy test on April 4, which indicated that you were pregnant, and your doctor confirmed that you were already over two months along at that point.

To understand when conception likely occurred, we can use a few key points:
1. Menstrual Cycle Length: Typically, a menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can vary significantly among individuals. Since you mentioned that your cycles are irregular, it’s important to note that ovulation (the release of an egg) can occur at different times in your cycle. Ovulation usually occurs about 14 days before the start of your next period. If your cycle is longer or shorter than average, this timing can shift.

2. Conception Timing: Conception typically occurs within 24 hours after ovulation when the egg is fertilized by sperm. If we assume that your cycle is irregular and you did not ovulate around the expected time, it is possible that you ovulated later than usual. If we consider the average cycle length, if you had a cycle of about 28 days, ovulation would have occurred around February 11-14. However, if your cycle is longer or shorter, this could shift the ovulation date.

3. Pregnancy Confirmation: When you took the pregnancy test on April 4, you were already about 4 weeks pregnant based on the standard method of calculating pregnancy weeks (which counts from the first day of your last menstrual period). Your doctor’s assessment of being over two months pregnant aligns with this, suggesting that conception likely occurred around mid-February.

4. Current Gestational Age: You mentioned that you are currently 15-16 weeks pregnant, which would place your estimated conception date around mid-February to early March, depending on the exact length of your cycle and when you ovulated.

5. Irregular Cycles and Conception: Irregular menstrual cycles can make it challenging to pinpoint the exact date of conception. Factors such as stress, hormonal imbalances, and lifestyle changes can all affect ovulation timing. If you have concerns about your menstrual irregularities or fertility, it may be beneficial to discuss these with your healthcare provider.

In summary, based on the information provided, it is likely that you conceived around mid-February, but this is an estimate and can vary based on your individual cycle. If you have further questions or concerns about your pregnancy or menstrual cycle, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance. They can offer insights based on your medical history and any relevant tests that may help clarify your situation.
