Inverted nipples in males, classified as a bilateral condition?
Hello doctor, I am a male and I have noticed that one of my nipples is indented with a line that looks like a cut.
It doesn't hurt or itch, but when the nipple is erect, it appears somewhat deformed and is noticeably different from the other side.
I am wondering what could be causing this and if it indicates any medical condition.

Hello! If you have an inverted nipple that is also protruding, it is recommended to see a general surgeon.
If there are no tumor concerns and it is purely an aesthetic issue, the decision to address it is up to you.

More Info
Nipple inversion in males can be a concerning condition, especially when it presents suddenly or with noticeable changes in appearance. While it is less common for men to experience nipple inversion compared to women, it can occur due to various reasons. Understanding the potential causes and implications is essential for addressing any concerns you may have.
Possible Causes of Male Nipple Inversion
1. Congenital Factors: Some individuals may be born with anatomical variations that lead to nipple inversion. This is often harmless and does not require treatment unless it causes discomfort or psychological distress.
2. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal imbalances can lead to changes in breast tissue, including nipple inversion. Conditions such as gynecomastia, which is the enlargement of breast tissue in males, can be influenced by hormonal fluctuations due to puberty, aging, or certain medications.
3. Infections or Inflammatory Conditions: Infections of the breast tissue or surrounding areas can cause changes in the nipple's appearance. Conditions like mastitis, although more common in females, can occur in males as well and may lead to nipple inversion.
4. Trauma or Injury: Any trauma to the chest area, including surgical procedures or accidents, can result in changes to the nipple's position. If you have experienced any recent injury, this could be a contributing factor.
5. Tumors or Growths: Although rare, the presence of tumors—benign or malignant—can affect the structure of the breast tissue and lead to nipple inversion. It is crucial to monitor any changes in the breast area and consult a healthcare professional if you notice any unusual lumps or growths.
6. Skin Conditions: Certain skin conditions affecting the nipple area, such as eczema or psoriasis, can also lead to changes in appearance, including inversion.
When to Seek Medical Attention
While nipple inversion can be benign, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider if you notice any of the following:
- Sudden changes in the appearance of your nipple.
- Any associated symptoms such as pain, itching, or discharge.
- A noticeable lump or mass in the breast tissue.
- Changes in the skin texture or color around the nipple.
Diagnostic Approach
A healthcare professional will typically perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or mammogram, to assess the underlying structures. Blood tests may also be conducted to evaluate hormone levels if hormonal imbalance is suspected.
Conclusion
In your case, the presence of a line or indentation in one of your nipples, along with the asymmetry compared to the other side, warrants a thorough evaluation. While it may not be painful or itchy, any noticeable change in your body should be taken seriously. It is advisable to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider, preferably a specialist in breast health or an endocrinologist, to discuss your symptoms and undergo appropriate diagnostic tests. Early intervention can help address any underlying issues and provide peace of mind.
