Male nipple issues
Hello Dr.
Li, I would like to ask, I am a male and my nipple has a groove that divides it into two halves, resembling a flat-headed screw, while the other side appears normal.
The indented part is not painful or itchy, but when it protrudes, the nipple looks somewhat deformed.
I would like to know if this is a congenital condition or if it indicates a disease that requires medical attention.

Understanding male nipple concerns can be a sensitive topic, but it is important to address any abnormalities or changes in the body, including the appearance of the nipples. In your case, you mentioned that one of your nipples has a line that creates a sort of indentation, resembling a screw shape, while the other nipple appears normal. You also noted that this indentation is not painful or itchy, but it does create a somewhat abnormal appearance when the nipple is erect.
First and foremost, it is essential to understand that male nipple anatomy can vary significantly from person to person. Some men may have naturally occurring variations in the shape and appearance of their nipples, which can be completely benign. However, any noticeable changes or asymmetries in the body should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying conditions.
In men, nipple and breast tissue can undergo changes due to various factors, including hormonal fluctuations, genetics, and even certain medical conditions. For instance, gynecomastia, which is the enlargement of breast tissue in males, can sometimes present with changes in nipple appearance. This condition can be caused by hormonal imbalances, certain medications, or underlying health issues.
Given that you described the indentation as being present without pain or discomfort, it is possible that this is a benign anatomical variation. However, it is crucial to consider other factors that may warrant a medical evaluation. If you notice any of the following symptoms, it would be advisable to seek medical advice:
1. Changes in Size or Shape: If the indentation becomes more pronounced or if there are changes in the overall size or shape of the nipple or breast tissue.
2. Discharge: Any unusual discharge from the nipple, especially if it is bloody or accompanied by other symptoms.
3. Pain or Discomfort: While you mentioned that there is no pain, any new onset of pain or discomfort should be evaluated.
4. Skin Changes: Any changes in the skin overlying the nipple, such as redness, scaling, or dimpling.
5. Family History: If there is a family history of breast cancer or other breast-related conditions, it may be prudent to have a professional evaluation.
In terms of when to seek medical advice, it is generally a good practice to consult with a healthcare provider if you have concerns about any changes in your body, especially if they are new or unusual. A healthcare professional can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the underlying tissue further.
In conclusion, while your description suggests that the indentation may be a benign anatomical variation, it is always best to err on the side of caution. A consultation with a healthcare provider, such as a urologist or a primary care physician, can provide you with peace of mind and ensure that any potential issues are addressed appropriately. Remember, early evaluation and intervention can be key in managing any health concerns effectively.
