Sensations After Forearm Surgery with Metal Plates - Orthopedics

After the steel plate insertion, there is sensation in the hand?

I would like to ask the doctor, I have an open fracture in my right forearm and had two plates inserted.
It has been over two weeks since the surgery, and I am no longer taking pain medication or antibiotics.
Sometimes, I feel muscle twitching in the injured area, and when I perform finger contractions, I can feel the plates or a sensation of fullness at the injury site.
Is this normal?

Dr. Wang Shouji reply Orthopedics

Hello: After a fracture surgery, the main focus is on the stability of the fracture reduction and fixation.
There may be some aching pain and swelling, but there are no specific abnormalities.
If there is severe pain, further X-ray examination is necessary.

After undergoing surgery for an open forearm fracture with the insertion of metal plates, it's not uncommon to experience various sensations as part of the healing process. The symptoms you describe, such as muscle twitching, a sensation of the plates during finger movements, and a feeling of tightness or pressure in the area, can be attributed to several factors related to the healing of your injury and the surgical procedure.

Firstly, muscle twitching or spasms can occur as the muscles and nerves around the surgical site begin to heal. This is often a normal response to trauma and surgery, as the body is adjusting to the changes in the anatomy and the presence of foreign materials like metal plates. The nerves in the area may also be irritated or compressed during the healing process, leading to sensations that can feel unusual or uncomfortable.

The sensation of feeling the plates during finger movements is also not unusual. The metal plates are positioned under the skin and can sometimes be felt, especially if there is swelling or if the surrounding soft tissues are still healing. As the swelling decreases and the tissues heal, this sensation may diminish over time.

The feeling of tightness or pressure in the area can be attributed to swelling, which is a common occurrence after surgery. Even if you are no longer taking pain medication or antibiotics, the body may still be in the process of healing, and inflammation can persist for several weeks. This can lead to a sensation of tightness as the tissues around the fracture site recover.

It's important to monitor these sensations and report any significant changes to your healthcare provider. If you experience increased pain, swelling, redness, or any signs of infection, you should seek medical attention promptly. Additionally, if the sensations become more pronounced or if you have concerns about the healing process, a follow-up appointment with your orthopedic surgeon may be warranted. They can perform a physical examination and, if necessary, imaging studies to ensure that the plates are in the correct position and that there are no complications such as infection or improper healing.

In summary, the sensations you are experiencing after your forearm surgery with metal plates are likely part of the normal healing process. Muscle twitching, the sensation of the plates, and feelings of tightness can all occur as your body adjusts to the surgical changes. However, it is essential to stay vigilant and communicate with your healthcare provider about any concerns or changes in your symptoms. Healing from surgery can take time, and each individual's recovery process is unique.
