Issues Related to the Insertion of Metal Pins After Surgery
Hello, Doctor!!! It has been a month since my surgery.
I had a fracture of the ulnar bone in my right hand, and they placed a metal plate and six screws.
1.
Is it normal to feel the screws under the skin after the wound has healed? 2.
Does cold weather causing stiffness in my hand have any implications? 3.
Is it normal to occasionally feel a tingling sensation in my hand? 4.
What precautions should I take while the screws are in place? 5.
How long will it take before they can be removed? Thank you very much for your help!!!

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
1.
That's considered normal.
Some people are thinner with less subcutaneous fat, so they can feel the metal plate.
2.
It's normal for the joints to be stiff after surgery.
Increasing wrist and elbow movements will help improve this.
3.
Tingling sensations are also common.
4.
Avoid impacts; you should not lift heavy objects or engage in intense exercise until the bones have fully healed.
5.
Typically, it takes about one to one and a half years for the bones to completely heal.

More Info
Hello! It's great to hear from you, and I'm glad you're reaching out with your post-surgery concerns. Let's address your questions one by one, and I'll provide some additional insights based on orthopedic recovery principles.
1. Is it normal to feel the steel pins after the wound has healed?
Yes, it is quite common to feel the presence of steel pins or plates after surgery, especially if the skin and underlying tissues have healed. The sensation of the pins can vary from person to person; some may feel them more acutely than others. However, if you experience significant discomfort or pain when touching the area, it’s advisable to consult your surgeon to ensure that everything is healing properly.
2. Does cold weather affect hand stiffness?
Yes, cold weather can indeed lead to increased stiffness in the joints and muscles, especially after surgery. This is often due to reduced blood flow and muscle tension in colder temperatures. It's important to keep your hand warm and perform gentle range-of-motion exercises to maintain flexibility. If you find that the stiffness is severe or persistent, consider discussing this with your physical therapist or doctor.
3. Is it normal to have occasional sharp pain in the hand?
Experiencing occasional sharp or tingling sensations can be normal during the recovery phase, especially if nerves were affected during surgery. This can be a sign of nerve regeneration or irritation. However, if the pain becomes more frequent or severe, or if you notice other symptoms like swelling or changes in color, it’s important to follow up with your healthcare provider.
4. What precautions should I take while the steel pins are in place?
While the pins are in place, you should follow your surgeon's specific instructions, which may include:
- Avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous activities that could stress the surgical site.
- Keeping the area clean and dry to prevent infection.
- Attending all follow-up appointments to monitor healing.
- Engaging in prescribed physical therapy to promote mobility and strength without overexerting yourself.
5. How long until the pins can be removed?
The timeline for removing steel pins can vary based on the type of fracture, the healing process, and your overall health. Generally, pins may be removed anywhere from 3 to 6 months post-surgery, but this can differ based on individual circumstances. Your surgeon will assess the healing through X-rays and clinical evaluation to determine the appropriate time for removal.
In addition to addressing your specific questions, it’s important to maintain open communication with your healthcare team. They can provide personalized advice based on your recovery progress. Remember that recovery from orthopedic surgery can be a gradual process, and patience is key. Engaging in physical therapy and adhering to your rehabilitation program will significantly aid in your recovery.
If you have any further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider. Wishing you a smooth recovery!
