Swallowing a fishbone?
Hello Dr.
Cheng: Last week, I accidentally swallowed a fishbone.
The next day, I felt a foreign body sensation and went to an ENT specialist.
The doctor used a tool to examine my throat and said there was nothing inside, but it might be a scratch from the fishbone.
Even until today, I still feel a sensation in my throat, but swallowing is normal, and I have no symptoms of fever or cough—just a persistent feeling of something stuck in my throat.
Can this be detected by an X-ray? The location is approximately in the middle of my neck, slightly to the left.
Do I need to go to a large hospital? Should I see a gastroenterologist or an ENT specialist?

Hello: If you only feel a sensation of something stuck in your throat without obvious pain or difficulty swallowing, you can observe for a few days.
If the pain persists or does not improve, you should first visit an otolaryngologist.
If necessary, you can then be referred to a gastroenterologist.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Swallowing a fish bone can be a concerning experience, and it’s understandable to feel anxious about the symptoms you’re experiencing. Based on your description, it seems that you have already taken an important first step by consulting an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist. They performed an examination and indicated that there was no visible foreign body in your throat, which is a positive sign.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
The symptoms you are experiencing, such as the sensation of something stuck in your throat (often described as a "lump" sensation), can occur after swallowing a fish bone, even if the bone has passed through the esophagus without causing any immediate harm. This sensation can be due to irritation or minor injury to the throat lining caused by the sharp edges of the fish bone.
In terms of imaging, X-rays can sometimes detect larger or more radio-opaque foreign bodies, but fish bones are often not visible on X-rays because they are not dense enough. If the fish bone is small or has already passed into the digestive tract, it may not show up at all. If the ENT specialist has ruled out the presence of a foreign body through direct examination, further imaging may not be necessary unless your symptoms worsen or new symptoms develop.
Next Steps
1. Monitor Symptoms: Since you are not experiencing severe symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, fever, or significant pain, it is advisable to monitor your condition. If the sensation persists or worsens, or if you develop any new symptoms, you should seek further medical attention.
2. Consulting the Right Specialist: Given that you have already seen an ENT specialist, it might be beneficial to follow up with them if your symptoms do not improve. If they determine that your symptoms are related to irritation rather than a foreign body, they may recommend treatments such as throat lozenges, anti-inflammatory medications, or other soothing remedies.
3. Gastroenterology Consultation: If the sensation continues and you have concerns about potential complications, a consultation with a gastroenterologist may be warranted. They can perform further evaluations, such as an endoscopy, to visualize the esophagus and stomach directly if necessary.
4. Home Remedies: In the meantime, you might find relief from the sensation by drinking warm liquids, eating soft foods, or using throat lozenges. Avoiding irritants such as spicy foods or alcohol can also help.
5. Emergency Signs: If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek immediate medical attention:
- Severe pain in the throat or chest
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Persistent vomiting
- Fever or chills
Conclusion
In summary, while swallowing a fish bone can lead to discomfort and anxiety, your current symptoms do not seem to indicate a serious complication, especially since you have already been evaluated by a specialist. Continue to monitor your symptoms, and don’t hesitate to seek further medical advice if needed. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
