Persistent negative emotions

Hello, doctor.
Since my youth, I have had a predominantly negative outlook on things.
At that time, I didn't realize how serious it was, but as I got older, this situation worsened.
In 2015, I suddenly started experiencing tinnitus, and after consulting several doctors and searching for related information online, I underwent an MRI, fearing that I might have an acoustic neuroma.
This worry led to insomnia, cold sweats, and gastric spasms.
When I visited a gastroenterologist, an abdominal ultrasound revealed that I had polyps in my gallbladder, kidney stones, and cysts in my liver.
During my most recent follow-up examination, an adrenal nodule was discovered.
Although the doctor kept saying that most of these findings are benign and arranged for a CT scan, I noticed that the anxiety I felt when the tinnitus first occurred has returned.
At that time, I sought help from a psychiatrist and took antidepressants for about six months.
The doctor advised me to coexist with the tinnitus, but now I am facing another situation where I cannot ascertain my health status.
I find myself constantly searching for information and overthinking.
I am already afraid of the test results before undergoing the tests, and I dread looking at the reports.
I know this mindset is not right, but I feel very lost...

To the inquiring netizen: Based on your description, you may be experiencing issues related to anxiety or depression.
It is recommended to be accompanied by friends or family to a psychiatric (or psychosomatic) outpatient clinic, where a psychiatrist can assist with the necessary evaluation and treatment.
If you are willing to accept help, this situation can typically improve with medication or psychotherapy.

Overcoming persistent negative emotions, especially those rooted in anxiety and health concerns, can be a challenging journey. It’s important to recognize that you are not alone in feeling overwhelmed by these emotions, and many people experience similar struggles. Your situation, characterized by a history of negative thinking, health anxieties, and physical symptoms, is complex and requires a multifaceted approach to address effectively.

First, it’s crucial to understand the interplay between mental health and physical health. Anxiety can manifest in various physical symptoms, such as insomnia, gastrointestinal issues, and even chronic pain. The body and mind are deeply interconnected; thus, when one is under stress, the other often reacts. In your case, the onset of tinnitus (ear ringing) seems to have triggered a cascade of health-related anxieties, leading to further physical symptoms and emotional distress.

The first step in overcoming these persistent negative emotions is to seek professional help. It’s commendable that you have already consulted various doctors and even sought help from a mental health professional. Continuing this path is essential. A mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist, can help you explore the underlying causes of your anxiety and develop coping strategies tailored to your needs. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is particularly effective for anxiety and can help you reframe negative thoughts and reduce the power they hold over you.

Medication can also play a role in managing anxiety. If you found some relief with antidepressants in the past, it might be worth discussing with your doctor the possibility of resuming medication or exploring other options. It’s important to have an open dialogue with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and concerns, including the fear of potential diagnoses. They can help you navigate these feelings and provide reassurance based on medical evidence.

In addition to professional help, self-care practices can significantly impact your emotional well-being. Engaging in regular physical activity, practicing mindfulness or meditation, and maintaining a balanced diet can help reduce anxiety levels. Mindfulness, in particular, can be beneficial in grounding you in the present moment, reducing the tendency to ruminate on health concerns or negative thoughts. Techniques such as deep breathing exercises or progressive muscle relaxation can also help manage acute anxiety symptoms.

Establishing a support system is equally important. Sharing your feelings with trusted friends or family members can alleviate the burden of carrying these emotions alone. Sometimes, just talking about your fears can lessen their intensity. Support groups, whether in-person or online, can also provide a sense of community and understanding, allowing you to connect with others who share similar experiences.

Lastly, it’s essential to practice self-compassion. Acknowledge that it’s okay to feel anxious and that you are doing your best to cope with your situation. Avoid self-judgment for your feelings; instead, treat yourself with kindness and understanding. Recognizing that overcoming negative emotions is a journey, not a destination, can help you approach your healing process with patience.

In conclusion, overcoming persistent negative emotions related to anxiety and health concerns is a multifaceted process that involves professional help, self-care, and support from others. By addressing both the mental and physical aspects of your health, you can begin to navigate your feelings of anxiety and work towards a more balanced emotional state. Remember, it’s okay to seek help, and taking small steps can lead to significant changes over time.
