Balanitis and posthitis caused by Candida infection?

If a doctor has candidal balanitis, will small pustules develop on the penis? I have developed about two of them, and will the glans become more sensitive? Will there be pus in the pustules? Because I read that others typically have them on the glans, but mine are on the shaft of the penis.

Hello: If the skin is inflamed, it may become broken, red, and develop blisters.
Therefore, it is important to keep the area clean and dry, and to practice safe behaviors.
Inflammation is not related to sensitivity and is also not location-dependent.

More Info

Candida balanitis, commonly referred to as yeast infection of the glans (the head of the penis), is caused by an overgrowth of the Candida species, a type of fungus. This condition can lead to a variety of symptoms and concerns, particularly for those affected.

Symptoms of Candida Balanitis
1. Redness and Swelling: The glans and the surrounding skin may appear red and swollen. This inflammation is often accompanied by discomfort and sensitivity.

2. Itching and Irritation: One of the hallmark symptoms of Candida balanitis is intense itching. This can lead to scratching, which may exacerbate the irritation and lead to secondary infections.

3. Discharge: In some cases, there may be a thick, white discharge that resembles cottage cheese. This discharge is often odorless but can be uncomfortable.

4. Pustules or Blisters: It is possible for small pustules or blisters to form on the affected area, including the shaft of the penis. These can be filled with pus or fluid and may burst, leading to further irritation.

5. Sensitivity: The glans may become more sensitive to touch, leading to discomfort during sexual activity or even while wearing clothing.

Concerns Regarding Symptoms
You mentioned experiencing small pustules on the shaft of your penis and increased sensitivity of the glans. It is important to note that while Candida infections typically manifest on the glans, they can also affect the shaft and surrounding areas. The presence of pustules can indicate a more severe infection or a secondary bacterial infection, especially if they are filled with pus.

Pustules and Discharge
Regarding your question about whether the pustules will leak pus: yes, if these pustules are indeed filled with pus, they can rupture and release fluid. This fluid may be a combination of pus and the discharge associated with the yeast infection. If you notice that these pustules are painful, increasing in size, or accompanied by fever or systemic symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis of Candida balanitis typically involves a physical examination and may include a swab of the affected area to confirm the presence of Candida. Treatment usually involves antifungal medications, which can be topical (applied directly to the affected area) or systemic (oral medications).

When to Seek Medical Attention
If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you develop additional symptoms such as fever, chills, or significant pain, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your specific situation.

Conclusion
In summary, Candida balanitis can present with a variety of symptoms, including pustules, increased sensitivity, and discharge. While it is common for the infection to affect the glans, it can also involve the shaft of the penis. If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation to ensure appropriate treatment and to rule out other potential infections or conditions. Taking prompt action can help alleviate discomfort and prevent complications.
