Redness and Blisters on the Penis: Causes and Concerns - Urology

Balanitis and Phimosis

I have red spots on my genitals, and there are two small white blisters near the red spots.
They are usually not painful or itchy (the red spots are on the scrotum).
When I wash the blisters with water during a shower, they become noticeably painful.
Additionally, my glans has suddenly become sensitive.
What kind of condition could this be?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: The presence of erythema indicates inflammation.
If there are blisters, it could be herpes.
If you have engaged in sexual activity, you should see a doctor for treatment.
If you have not had sexual activity, keep the area clean and dry for 2-3 days without using soap or body wash.
Rinse with clean water and pat dry to see if it improves.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to redness and blisters on the penis, there are several potential causes that could explain your symptoms. Given that you have described red spots and white blisters near the scrotum, along with increased sensitivity of the glans (the head of the penis), it's important to consider a few common conditions that could be responsible for these symptoms.

1. Contact Dermatitis: This condition arises from irritation or an allergic reaction to substances that come into contact with the skin. This could include soaps, lotions, or even laundry detergents. If you've recently changed any products, this could be a potential cause of the redness and sensitivity.

2. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can occur in the genital area. It can present as red bumps or blisters and may be painful when touched. This condition is often caused by bacterial or fungal infections, or even friction from clothing.

3. Genital Herpes: This sexually transmitted infection (STI) can cause painful blisters and sores in the genital area. The initial outbreak may be accompanied by flu-like symptoms, but subsequent outbreaks may be milder. If you have had unprotected sexual contact, this is a possibility that should be considered.

4. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, harmless bumps that can appear around the glans of the penis. They are not a disease but rather a normal anatomical variation. However, they can sometimes be mistaken for something more serious.

5. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, which can lead to redness, swelling, and sensitivity. It can be caused by infections, poor hygiene, or irritants. If the glans is inflamed, it may become more sensitive to touch.

6. Fungal Infections: Conditions like candidiasis (yeast infection) can also cause redness and discomfort in the genital area. This is more common in individuals who are immunocompromised or have diabetes.

Given that you mentioned the blisters become painful when exposed to water, this could indicate an inflammatory process or an infection. The increased sensitivity of the glans could also suggest irritation or inflammation.

Recommendations:
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: It is crucial to seek medical advice from a healthcare professional, preferably a dermatologist or urologist, who can perform a physical examination and possibly run tests to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.

- Avoid Irritants: Until you see a doctor, try to avoid any potential irritants, including scented soaps or lotions, and wear loose-fitting underwear to minimize friction.

- Maintain Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. Good hygiene can help prevent further irritation or infection.

- Avoid Sexual Activity: If you suspect an STI or any infectious condition, it's best to refrain from sexual activity until you have been evaluated and treated.

In summary, while there are several potential causes for the redness and blisters on your penis, a proper diagnosis from a healthcare professional is essential for effective treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and provide relief from your symptoms.
