After a car accident, there was a impact to the back of the head?
I had a car accident in January where I sustained a severe impact to the back of my head.
At that time, I only experienced slight dizziness and nausea, which didn't seem too serious, so I didn't seek medical attention.
However, recently I've been experiencing frequent headaches in the back of my head, and there's a small hard lump there.
Sometimes I also wake up with numbness in my hands or dizziness.
Should I get this checked out?

More Info
After a car accident, experiencing persistent head pain, especially in the area of a previous injury, can be concerning and warrants careful consideration. Given your description of a severe impact to the back of your head, along with symptoms like frequent headaches, a hard lump, and occasional numbness or dizziness upon waking, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
Head injuries can lead to various complications, including concussions, post-concussion syndrome, and more serious conditions such as intracranial hemorrhages (bleeding within the skull). While you initially felt only mild symptoms, the development of ongoing headaches and the presence of a hard lump could indicate that there may be underlying issues that need to be addressed.
When to Seek Medical Attention
1. Persistent Headaches: If you are experiencing frequent headaches that are worsening or not responding to over-the-counter pain relief, this is a strong indicator that you should consult a healthcare professional.
2. Neurological Symptoms: Symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or weakness in your limbs, especially if they are new or worsening, should prompt immediate medical evaluation. These could suggest nerve involvement or other neurological issues.
3. Dizziness and Balance Issues: Feeling dizzy or having balance problems can be signs of a concussion or other serious conditions. If these symptoms are recurrent, it is crucial to have them assessed.
4. Lump on the Head: The presence of a hard lump following a head injury can be a hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels) or other types of swelling. While some lumps may resolve on their own, others may require monitoring or intervention.
5. Changes in Consciousness or Cognition: If you experience confusion, difficulty concentrating, or any changes in your level of consciousness, you should seek immediate medical attention.
Recommended Actions
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given your symptoms, it is advisable to see a neurologist or a healthcare provider specializing in head injuries. They may perform a physical examination, neurological assessments, and possibly imaging studies such as a CT scan or MRI to rule out any serious conditions.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep a detailed record of your symptoms, including when they occur, their intensity, and any associated factors (like stress or changes in sleep). This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider.
- Avoid Self-Medication: While it may be tempting to manage symptoms with over-the-counter medications, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider before starting any new medications, especially if you have a history of head injury.
- Rest and Recovery: Ensure you are getting adequate rest and avoiding activities that could exacerbate your symptoms. This includes limiting screen time and engaging in activities that require significant concentration.
Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms following a car accident, particularly the persistent headaches, hard lump, and neurological signs, suggest that a medical evaluation is necessary. Early intervention can help prevent potential complications and ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for a thorough assessment and appropriate management of your condition. Your health and safety should always come first, especially after a significant head injury.
